Opsera is a metric I created to rank teams in terms of averaging their hitting and pitching. Opsera is extremely simple; I take each team's total OPS, move the decimal point one place to the right and then subtract their respective ERAs from that number. The best teams will finish the season with a mark over 4.00 and the worst teams are usually under 2.50. The single game Opsera is the first number listed with the run total listed in parenthesis. Team of the Day: St. Louis Cardinals Game Opsera Scores Kansas City Royals: 1.75 (2) Chicago White Sox: 6.13 (4) - Letting Kyle Farnsworth pitch the eight instead of Juan Cruz is a decision Trey Hillman would like to have back after the Jim Thome three-run blast, which spoiled a great outing from Gil Meche and a homer from Alex Gordon. Milwaukee Brewers: -1.84 (6) San Francisco Giants: 6.35 (10) - The Giants did two things they almost never did in 2008; score double-digit runs and win without a dominating performance from Tim Lincecum. Tamp Bay Rays: -1.96 (3) Boston Red Sox: 6.24 (5) - A tried and true formula leads to a Boston win; 10k's over 7.0 from Josh Beckett, great days at the plate from Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis, plus an easy ninth from Jonathan Papelbon. Atlanta Braves: 7.11 (4) Philadelphia Phillies: 0.69 (0) - Atlanta's starters have yet to give an earned this season. Detroit Tigers: 3.75 (4) Toronto Blue Jays: 3.16 (5) - Edwin Jackson kept Toronto's bat quiet for seven innings, but they then erupted for five runs in the final two frames, as the Detroit bullpen couldn't save it for him. Washington Nationals: -1.71 (3) Florida Marlins: 6.74 (8) - Almost seven innings pitched, eight strikeouts, no walks, no runs; a very nice line for Josh Johnson. Seattle Mariners: 1.02 (5) Minnesota Twins: 1.39 (6) - Brandon Morrow has been anointed the Seattle closer of the present and future, but he yielded three earned runs to blow a late lead on the road. Chicago Cubs: 2.83 (2) Houston Astros: 6.18 (3) - Wandy Rodriguez and Ryan Dempster were each excellent, but the Houston bullpen was a little better at the end of the game. Oakland Athletics: 5.65 (6) Los Angeles Angels: 0.94 (4) - The A's were a singles machine with 12 of them one day after being held to three total hits. Pittsburgh Pirates: -2.28 (3) St. Louis Cardinals: 9.49 (9) - With a homer on his two-for-three, two walk, three runs scored day, Albert Pujols has an OPS of 2.086, nearly double his career mark. Los Angeles Dodgers: 0.46 (2) San Diego Padres: 4.60 (4) - Chris Young looked a lot like his old self over six innings and Heath Bell recorded his first post-Hoffman save. Colorado Rockies: 5.50 (3) Arizona Diamondbacks: 1.29 (0) - Ubaldo Jimenez struck out eight over seven scoreless innings and got help at the plate from Troy Tulowitzki's second homer of the season. * Opsera will be the metric we use to rank all 30 teams throughout the 2009 season and we also will present this on a daily basis in order to quickly determine how well or poorly teams played in single games. Run-saving defensive plays and timely hitting aren't taken into account in any meaningful way with the Opsera, nor is timely/situational hitting but it gives a pure reading of how well teams hit and pitched.
