With Tom Glavine gaining the 291st victory of his career, the Mets won their first game for the 29th time in 38 years. They outdefended, outpitched and outhit the defending World Series champions. They outscored them, too, 6-1. Glavine gained his fifth victory in eight Opening Day starts, supported by sharp execution -- four double plays and a runner thrown out at the plate -- and rallies in the third and fourth innings against Chris Carpenter that produced all the Mets runs. He was gone, in favor of Pedro Feliciano, after six innings, having allowed six hits, a walk and a run. Rookie Joe Smith replaced Feliciano following a walk to Aaron Miles to start the eighth. Smith allowed a single by David Eckstein and struck out Preston Wilson before he walked Albert Pujols to load the bases. Aaron Heilman replaced Smith, and the inning ended with the Mets' fourth double play, initiated by Jose Valentin, who dived to handle Scott Rolen's well-struck one-hopper. Carlos Delgado and Paul Lo Duca drove in two runs each as the Mets forced Carpenter from the game after six innings. The Cardinals starter had allowed nine hits and a walk and hit a batter, Carlos Beltran, in the third, after he had narrowly missed a home run.
