The San Diego Padres announced today that the club has agreed to terms with infielder Adrian Gonzalez on a four-year contract through the 2010 season with a club option for 2011. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement. "Adrian has established himself as one of the great young players in the game and is a key component to our ballclub," said Towers. "We are excited he's going to be in a Padres uniform for many years to come, not only because he's a quality player but also a quality person." Gonzalez, 24, batted .304 (173-for-570) with 38 doubles, 24 home runs, 82 RBIs and 83 runs scored in 156 games for San Diego in 2006 and was named the Padres' Most Valuable Player. He led the club in several offensive categories, including batting average, hits, doubles, home runs and slugging percentage (.500). In four Division Series games against the St. Louis Cardinals, he hit .357 (5-for-14) with three walks and two runs scored.
