The San Diego Padres today agreed to terms with Manager Bruce Bochy on a two-year contract extension. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement. "Bruce Bochy has reached several milestones with the Padres within the past few years and those reflect as to what type of leader he is," said Towers. "I have always felt that Bruce is one of the best baseball minds in the business and we're pleased to have him lead our ballclub through at least 2007." Bochy, 50, has led the Padres to a 40-31 record and a 4.5-game lead in the National League West this season. On May 11, Bochy managed the Padres to a 7-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park for the 800th win of his career, and became the 65th manager in Major League history to accomplish that feat. Additionally, he is one of just 33 managers to reach 800 wins with a single club. That same month, Bochy led the Padres to a 22-6 mark, establishing a new franchise record for wins in any single month. Only three active managers, Atlanta's Bobby Cox (1,583), the New York Yankees' Joe Torre (924) and St. Louis' Tony LaRussa (839) have won more games with their current clubs than Bochy (821). "Bruce has earned the confidence and respect of his players, coaches, peers and front office, and extending his contract at this time adds to the continuity and stability that are important elements in building a championship organization," said Padres CEO Sandy Alderson. "He has the winning combination of baseball knowledge and people skills that has earned my full confidence in him."
