Cubs' Cody Bellinger, Seiya Suzuki Could Be Back Next Week

May 5, 2024 1:59 AM

The Cubs are inching closer to getting two of their better hitters back from injury, manager Craig Counsell announced Saturday morning.

Outfielders Cody Bellinger (ribs) and Seiya Suzuki (oblique) could be back with the team as soon as next week.

"Belli is a little ahead of Suzuki," Counsell said before the Cubs hosted the Milwaukee Brewers. "We're going through baseball activities, making sure they feel good coming out of that and then progressing."

Suzuki, 29, has been out since mid-April after tweaking his oblique running to first base, while Bellinger, 28, has missed the past two weeks after colliding into a brick wall while tracking down a fly ball.

Luis Arraez Collects Four Hits In Padres Debut

May 5, 2024 1:28 AM

Luis Arraez had four hits and an RBI in his first game after being traded from the Miami Marlins, Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run homer in San Diego's eight-run seventh inning and the Padres routed the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1 on Saturday.

The Padres made a massive deal Friday, acquiring Arraez from the Marlins along with nearly $7.9 million in a trade for four players. The two-time batting champion didn't join his new team until about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, but wasted no time in producing, going 4 for 6 while scoring two runs.

"Clearly an amazing approach and I can see why he is the rightful moniker of 'The Sprinkler,'" Padres manager Micke Shildt said.

"It was exciting," Cole said. "This was a good day for me. I was fired up."

Aaron Judge Ejected For First Time

May 5, 2024 1:25 AM

Aaron Judge has accomplished plenty during his nine-year major league career. The five-time All-Star set the American League record for home runs in a season in 2022. He won the AL MVP award. He was named the 16th captain in New York Yankees history.

And not once in his first 869 career games was the 32-year-old slugger ever ejected.

That streak, though, ended Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Judge was tossed for the first time leading off the seventh inning after arguing a called third strike in the Yankees' eventual 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Cubs' Justin Steele About Ready To Return

May 3, 2024 2:46 PM

Cubs ace Justin Steele is just about ready to return to Chicago's rotation after being sidelined since the season opener because of a strained left hamstring.

Steele is on track to start Monday against San Diego, assuming he gets through one more bullpen session with no issues, manager Craig Counsell said Friday. The left-hander was hurt trying to field a bunt at Texas in his Opening Day start.

"We've missed him for a month, and it'll be good to get him going," Counsell said.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is scheduled to throw off a mound Saturday for the first time since getting injured in spring training.

"Whether that's a full bullpen or what exactly that looks like, we'll see," New York manager Aaron Boone said before Friday night's game against Detroit. "I think it's gone well so far, his build-up and checking the boxes and the level of intensity of throwing and things like that. So far, so good. Getting off the mound will obviously be another step."

MLB, Roku In Talks On Sunday Morning Broadcasts

May 3, 2024 8:59 AM

Major League Baseball is in "advanced talks" with the streaming company Roku about hosting Sunday morning broadcasts this season, according to a report.

It was reported last month that Roku was a potential option to carry the Sunday morning games.

MLB introduced the Sunday morning broadcast as part of a streaming deal with Peacock in 2022.

The NBC streaming service walked away from that agreement a few weeks ago. The report states that Peacock wanted to renegotiate the fee to pay the league roughly $10 million per season, well below the annual $30 million price it paid for the first two years.
