San Jose To File Suit Against MLB For Blocking A's Move

The city council of San Jose has voted to file a lawsuit against Major League Baseball for refusing to allow the Oakland A's to relocate.

The city's complaint is that MLB has unlawfully conspired to limit competition by controlling the location of teams.

The A's want to build a stadium in San Jose, but the San Francisco Giants claim territorial rights to the area and the MLB has backed that claim to date.

Steinbrenner Wanted Mattingly To Manage Yankees

Don Mattingly, who played 14 seasons with the Yankees, is returning to New York as manager of the Dodgers this season.

Mattingly said he was never sure if he'd get a chance to manage in New York.

"I didn't know," he said. "I know [former Yankees owner] Mr. [George] Steinbrenner wanted me to manage. He thought I would be a good manager. But I had no guarantees of anything.

"They treated me fairly I thought. Things work out for a reason. That would have been really bad timing for me. Terrible. I was going through some personal stuff that would have been miserable trying to manage for the first time and have that going on. So, that was a blessing in disguise. Coming to L.A. has been great, and obviously there's been a lot of turmoil this year, but I love what I'm doing and I like being in L.A."

Joe Girardi is currently the manager of the Yankees.

Peavy Having Difficulty Breathing, Sleeping

Jake Peavy is having issues breathing and sleeping because of his fractured left rib.

For that reason, he has not been cleared to start a conditioning program that Peavy hopes to receive clearance for by the end of the week.

"The biggest thing is any kind of heavy breathing in my diaphragm expanding; we're trying to stay away from that," Peavy said. "My life has been pretty easy as far as physical activity goes these past few weeks. It's been as uneasy as can be when the team is going the way it's going and you can't be a factor."

Peavy hasn't pitched since June 4.

"It's a funky injury and tough to miss time when you've got an injury like this that you really can't explain," Peavy said. "It's just a tough, tough deal.''

Peavy believes he is close to being able to ride a stationary bicycle and anticipates he'll undergo an MRI by the end of the week to assess the healing.

Vogelsong To Have Hand Re-Examined

Ryan Vogelsong will have his surgically repaired pitching hand re-examined with the hope of taking another step in his recovery.

Vogelsong broke two bones in his right pinkie area and also dislocated a knuckle in the hand on a swing May 20 and underwent surgery the next day.

The expected recovery time is six to eight weeks until Vogelsong is pitching again, but he likely would need a rehab assignment before re-joining the Giants.

Chris Christie Pledges Loyalty To Mets

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has pledged his allegiance to the Mets.

During a visit to Samsel Upper Elementary School in Parlin, N.J., Christie was asked by a schoolchild about his favorite sports team.

"My favorite baseball team is the New York Mets," Christie said, which was met with a mixture of cheers and jeers from the school children.

"See, now, these are probably Yankees fans, right, that are booing," Christie continued. "Are those Yankees fans that are booing?

"OK, here's what I don't understand about Yankees fans: The Mets stink. We're awful. And the Yankees are usually really good. So why do you boo us? You should feel badly for us. We root for this awful team that never wins and yet the Yankees fans boo us. I don't understand that."

Giancarlo Stanton hit two home runs against the Diamondbacks on Monday, the 99th and 100th blasts of his career.

Stanton struggled mightily in April, batting .227, but since returning from a hamstring injury he has hit .392 with four homers and 10 RBIs.

"He's going up there right now with a ton of confidence," Mike Redmond said. "It's nice to see him like that. Every time he goes up there, you feel like there's a chance he's going to do something big."

Astros Haven't Signed Mark Appel

Despite reports last week, the Houston Astros have not yet reached a deal with first overall pick Mark Appel.

Jeff Luhnow said the club is "fully engaged" in contract talks with the right-hander from Stanford. Houston hopes to complete a deal this week.

"We're trying to move it as fast as we can," Luhnow said. "We wanted to give him the weekend to enjoy his commencement. We're optimistic we can move it pretty quickly."

Luhnow said the Astros have yet to meet with Appel or his representative, Scott Boras, but there have been solid conversations.
