Daniel Murphy Blasts Off
Daniel Murphy may turn out to be one of those guys whose disciplined approach makes him an overachiever at the major league level – a rare player, and even rarer New York prospect, whose productivity at the top outperforms even the lofty estimations of his talent.
Fernando Tatis Resurrected
Fernando Tatis hit 34 homers in 1998, but just a few seasons later he was out of baseball.
'Striking Out With The Mets', Volume 1.0
Johan Santana has given up as many home runs (4) as the Mets' lineup has hit out of the yard. Willie Randolph's bats have struggled mightily against righties.
2008 Season Preview: New York Mets
Since Atlanta has improved and Philadelphia has had some of their cockiness confirmed, the path to the playoffs will be decidedly more difficult for the Mets, even with Johan Santana.
Grading The Deal: Mets Land Santana
The only certain thing is that the Mets received the best pitcher in baseball while managing to keep their top prospect in Fernando Martinez, and the Twins received four prospects that could easily be destined for mediocrity.
Grading The Deal: Mets Trade Mota For Estrada
When the Yorvit Torreabla talks broke down, Omar Minaya looked upon the trade market to fill his need for a catcher and found his man in Milwaukee’s Johnny Estrada. The cost of the acquisition was merely Guillermo Mota.
The State Of The Franchise: New York Mets
The Mets are in the middle of a win-now and win-every season mode and will continue to be through the first few seasons of Citi Field, opening in 2009, and likely through the entire David Wright/Jose Reyes-era. While the conclusion of their 2007 season was terribly disappointing, the present and future in Queens looks good.
The Wrong Side Of History
A tired bullpen, aging veterans, immaturity, poor preparedness, lack of focus - the excuses are endless as to why the National League favorite to go to the World Series ended there season on September 30th.
The Case For David Wright
Though he started slowly and had many naysayers questioning his true abilities, New York Mets' starting third baseman David Wright should be considered a strong National League Most Valuable Player candidate and is well on his way to becoming the greatest Met player ever at that position.
Better Late Than Never
Damion Easley is now 37 and has been knocking around baseball for 15 years at 2B and SS. A New York native, he's a career .251 hitter who has been on six teams. It has been that kind of career for Easley, now enjoying success in his waning years.
What A Difference A Year Makes
After looking like he may turn into another one of those big busts that come to the Mets, such as their “savior” Bobby Bonilla, Carlos Beltran is a fan favorite in New York. His numbers are staggering and better then ever before. He is going to have career years and probably set Met records with home runs and RBIs. He gets big hits, and carries the team when they need him most.
Mets To Atlanta: Buh-Bye
After a decade of indignities visited upon by them by the always-superior Atlanta Braves, the Mets put the hurt on their tormentors. Sweet revenge came in a barrage of hits, home runs, and ace relief pitching, as the Mets swept a series at Turner Field for the first time in 21 years, and virtually ended any outside prayers Atlanta had of winning the NL East.
The New York Six Factor
The 2006 Mets have many similarities with the 1996 Yankees. They are both up and coming teams that are built to win now, while having enough young stars to keep the team in contention for the next decade. Both teams had a great mix of young talent with veteran leadership. With David Wright, Jose Reyes, Pedro Martinez and the Carlos Brothers, are the Mets ready for the big time?
The Price Of A Remade Rotation
In preparing for the 2006 season, Omar Minaya recognized a surplus of somewhat decent starting pitchers behind Pedro (Glavine, Trachsel, Heilman, Zambrano, Benson, Seo, Bannister), and decided to deal from a strength to improve the weak bullpen. A decent idea on the surface, but Omar went overboard.
The Worst Of The Catchers Available?
The Mets had four catchers available. To me, Lo Duca was the worst option of the four. Though he is still considerably younger than Piazza, the difference in salary and years makes Piazza’s current contract status much more favorable to any team. He’s a ridiculously overrated hitter, still living off of his spectacular 2001 season.
“Martinez Magic”
Pedro Martinez pitched a complete game shutout against the Atlanta Braves to help his New York Mets win the series opener, 4-0.
Mets, Pedro and the W
Last night was another example of the lack of support Pedro receives from his New York Mets.
“The Future”
"When Jose Reyes is running the bases and doing his thing, I wish I was him. In my next life, I want to come back with the abilities that Jose has. I might even become a shortstop. I can tell you I'd pay more than 50 bucks -- more than a hundred bucks -- to see him play. And I'd get the best seat in the stadium, if I could." --Pedro Martinez
Why A Mets Columnist Can't Help But Hate The Yankees
How perfect would it have been for the Mets themselves to send former Met player and manager Torre to his firing from the Yankees? A Yankee season without postseason play, much less a sub-.500 season, is unthinkable in this age of the $200 million payroll.
The Art Of The Boo
New York Mets fans have been excessive with their booing this season and it has yet to accomplish anyting productive.
Shea As A Standard
What people tend to forget is the atmosphere at Shea. When fans arrive, and they usually arrive early to see their team play, they come to have fun. The attitude at the end of every win at Shea is the same as that of the climax of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.
Pedromania?
People are showing up just to witness the new Mets pitcher. With numerous Dominican flags around Shea, not since Fernandomania has such a craze taken place.
Faster Than A Speeding Baseball
Many people have noticed this season that Mets short stop, Jose Reyes smiles not only when he rips a great triple down the center but when he strikes out as well, a friend of mine and long time Yankee enthusiast tried to explain to me the problem, “Reyes thinks it’s a game.”
Disappointment Again As Mets Blunder First Of Three
New hope came in the bottom of the third as both Jose Reyes and Miguel Cairo raised their on-base percentage. It was then that our other pricey acquisition took the field. Tension grew as the cowbells roared. After reaching a full count, of course, Carlos Beltran, in traditional Mets fashion struck out. Swing, and of course, a miss.
The Delgado Effect
In acquiring Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran, Mets General Manager Omar Minaya did almost everything right this off-season. But his failure to land Carlos Delgado may turn out to be the defining reason why the Florida Marlins, and not the Mets, will make the playoffs in 2005.
Mientkiewicz Adds Many Intangibles To His New York Mets Club
In time, New York first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz will prove to be the glue of this Met team.
Mr. Koo’s Wild Run Inspires Mets
Leading off the seventh inning with the Mets nursing a 2-0 lead, the left-handed swinging Koo likely was just looking to survive against the 6’10 lefty known as the Big Unit. Mets players moved to the top step of the dugout, anticipating another embarrassing adventure at the plate by the man known as “Mr. Koo.”
Meet The (New) Mets
Carlos Beltran didn’t waste any time making his presence felt once he became a Met in January. Of course, you’d expect a guy who’s just signed for $119 million for seven years—about $17 million more than he apparently was willing to settle for to play for the Yankees—to do something significant.
