Yankees Sign First-Round Pick Blake Rutherford

Jun 29, 2016 2:46 PM

The New York Yankees have signed first-round pick Blake Rutherford.

New York took him with the 18th overall pick earlier this month.

The Yankees will assign Rutherford to its Gulf Coast League affiliate.

Rutherford has signed for $3,282,000 -- significantly over the allotted slot bonus of $2,441,600 for his slot.

He is a left-handed-hitting prospect out of Chaminade College Preparatory School (CA).

M's Select Trey Griffey On Day 3 Of Draft

Jun 12, 2016 6:26 PM

Trey Griffey, the son of Hall of Fame outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., has been selected in the Major League Baseball draft by the Mariners in the 24th round -- fittingly, his father's old team and jersey number.

It appears the pick Saturday on the draft's final day is simply the Mariners paying homage to their former star. The younger Griffey is a wide receiver at the University of Arizona, but hasn't played baseball competitively since before high school. He had 11 catches for 284 yards, including a 95-yard touchdown grab as a redshirt junior, last season.

Phillies Could Draft Cheaper Player To Use Money On Second Rounder

Jun 9, 2016 2:32 PM

The Philadelphia Phillies have the first overall pick in Thursday's Major League Draft and have been linked to A.J. Puk, Kyle Lewis, Corey Ray and Blake Rutherford.

Keith Law reports that the Phillies may draft based on price tag.

"If the Phillies can save $1 million by taking the No. 2 player on their board and then apply that money to sign pick 42 to an overslot deal, they'll do so," Law writes. "And they should -- it's exactly what the current CBA encourages teams to do."

Kyle Lewis Shooting Up Draft Boards

Jun 9, 2016 7:29 AM

The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to take either Florida left-hander A.J. Puk or California high school outfielder Mickey Moniak with the first overall pick, but Mercer outfielder Kyle Lewis is gaining steam.

While teams are getting more and more interested in Lewis, there are questions about his busy right-handed swing and his small-college competition.
