Julio Urias Pleads No Contest To Battery

May 3, 2024 8:43 AM

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge tied to his September arrest on suspicion of domestic violence.

Urias was placed on 36 months of summary probation and ordered to complete 30 days of community labor as well as a 52-week domestic violence counseling course, a spokesperson for the L.A. City Attorney's Office said.

The 27-year-old must also pay a domestic violence fund fee, not possess any weapons, not use any force or violence, pay restitution to the victim and abide by a protective order.

Urias was originally arrested Sept. 3 on suspicion of felony domestic violence for an incident that occurred in the parking lot of BMO Stadium after an LAFC soccer match, during which an eyewitness saw Urias get into a physical altercation with his wife.

Money Stolen From Shohei Ohtani Funneled To Bookie Via Vegas Casino

May 1, 2024 8:21 AM

The series of $500,000 payments Ippei Mizuhara sent from Shohei Ohtani's bank account to an illegal bookmaking operation were forwarded to casinos in California and Las Vegas, where the money was deposited in gambling accounts, converted to playing chips and cashed out to pay the bookie, according to multiple sources.

Mathew Bowyer, the California bookmaker who took Mizuhara's bets, was a frequent customer at Las Vegas casino Resorts World.

Mizuhara paid his losses to Bowyer's associate, who forwarded the money to his own "marker" accounts at Resorts World and Pechanga Resort Casino in Southern California. The men then withdrew chips from the marker account, gambled with them, and if they won, cashed out, according to sources.

Bowyer, 49, lost $7.9 million at Resorts World from June 2022 to October 2023, according to multiple sources. After Bowyer's home was raided by federal agents on Oct. 5, he was dubbed a known bookmaker and banned from entering casinos throughout the United States.

A's Hire Firm To Help Raise $500M In Funding For Vegas Ballpark

Apr 30, 2024 10:15 AM

The Athletics have retained an investment banking firm in an effort to procure $500 million in private funding towards the construction of their Las Vegas ballpark, according to a report.

The club is prepared to offer minority ownership shares in the franchise to potential investors as they put together financing for their estimated $1.5 billion stadium.

Nevada lawmakers approved $380 million in public funding last summer — taking the form of state tax credits, county-issued bonds and a county credit — to offset a chunk of the cost.
