Wainwright: Expanding Strike Zone Would Speed Up Game

Sep 16, 2014 8:05 PM

Adam Wainwright believes expanding the strike zone would speed up the game of baseball.

Baseball faces longer games this season with the introduction of expanded replay and challenges.

"All of the talk for everybody, all the critics, is about the speed of play," Wainwright said.

"Speed of play this and speed of play that. But really the only way to do that, to speed things up, is to expand the strike zone. ... There are millions of dollars being made on the commercials. Millions. And yet they want to talk about the speed of play. If you want to keep the commercials, open the strike zone up."

Cardinals 'Embarrassed' By Carlos Martinez's Twitter Incident

Sep 18, 2014 7:19 PM

Carlos Martinez was taught a valuable lesson just two weeks into spring training about using social media.

Martinez, a 22-year-old right-hander, found himself in the middle of a Twitter firestorm this week after pornographic photos and links on his "favorites" page were discovered throughout his account.

He acknowledged the situation and worked with team officials to clean up his account Monday.

"We're embarrassed, and he's embarrassed," manager Mike Matheny said. "I'm not trying to shove my morality down anybody's throat. I've made that very clear. But I also need to be concerned about it [and] realize, is this something you'd want your kids to see? Is this something that you want to be known for? Is this how you want to be remembered?

"We are, like it or not, role models. Regardless of your moral compass and where it points, those sorts of things that we're talking about are not things we want our kids seeing."

Jaime Garcia Seeks Second Opinion On Shoulder

Oct 31, 2014 6:15 AM

Jaime Garcia will seek a second opinion on his surgically repaired shoulder from Dr. James Andrews before deciding his next course of action.

Garcia requested the second opinion even before consulting with St. Louis Cardinals doctors.

"Based on the MRI and overall, we feel good," John Mozeliak said. "I would like to see what the other doctor has to say and we will go from there."

The 27-year old had been the favorite to become the lone left-hander in the Cardinals rotation. Mozeliak said this setback makes it unlikely that Garcia will be ready for the start of the season.

Cardinals Won't Limit Wacha's Innings

Nov 17, 2014 4:50 PM

The St. Louis Cardinals won't set any limits for Michael Wacha this season.

"I don't see any reason why there is the buzz about the workload," pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said. "He had 170 innings last year. You can think he could be a 200-inning guy this year. At the end of the day we need some guys who can give us 200 innings."

Shelby Miller exceeded 170 innings as a rookie, but that prompted the Cardinals to slow him down.

Wacha, 22, exceeded Miller's innings total last season when minor league action is factored into the total. He threw nearly 100 innings in the major leagues, with 30 2/3 occurring during postseason play.

His breakout came in the postseason where went 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA and 33 strikeouts.

"It was a lot of fun, that's for sure, being on that kind of stage and performing the way we all did," Wacha said. "Those expectations are going to be set pretty high after the season we all just had. I just try not to listen too much and set my own expectations and try to achieve those."

Peralta Reports To Cardinals Looking To Redeem Himself

Oct 23, 2014 4:14 AM

Jhonny Peralta checked into spring training camp with the St. Louis Cardinals four days ahead of the mandatory reporting date.

Peralta was suspended for 50 games last season while with Detroit Tigers because of his involvement with the Biogenesis drug scandal.

"I know a lot of fans, they are going to talk," Peralta said. "They are going to say a lot of things. It's baseball. You need to forget about it and try to play baseball."

He became a free agent after the season and signed a four-year contract with the Cardinals worth $53 million.
