Cubs-Pirates Play To MLB's First Tie Since 2005

Sep 30, 2016 4:21 PM

The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates played to the first tie in Major League Baseball since June 2005 on Thursday.

Rain forced the teams to stop playing in the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1 and led to a delay of nearly 90 minutes. Because the game has no effect on postseason positioning and the teams aren't scheduled to play again this season, MLB decided the game would not be made up and officially declared it a tie.

All stats from the game will count.

Yankees Could Make Run At Re-Signing Aroldis Chapman

Sep 26, 2016 7:48 AM

The New York Yankees are expected to make a run at re-signing Aroldis Chapman, who they traded to the Chicago Cubs this summer.

New York could easily have success with Dellin Betances as their closer, Chapman is more athletic on the mound and as a left-hander he controls the running game better.

Opposing base runners have stolen just one base in two tries against Chapman this season.

Cubs Aren't Concerned With Dip In Jake Arrieta's Velocity

Sep 21, 2016 10:50 AM

Jake Arrieta has endured an up-and-down season and a loss to the Brewers continued the trend.

Arrieta gave up four hits over six innings, but walked four and surrendered a home run to Ryan Braun.

"I'm not concerned with it," he said. "Just need to find that comfort with the sinker in the strike zone, first pitch. After that, it opens up a lot of doors. We're working on it."

While Arrieta seems focused on his off-speed stuff, Joe Maddon often references his velocity.

"There were a lot of 93s (mph)," Maddon said. "I think he hit 95 once or twice. But he's not complaining of being tired or anything bothering him physically."

Cubs Clinch First NL Central Title Since 2008

Sep 16, 2016 8:23 AM

The Chicago Cubs became the first Major League team to clinch a division crown when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night.

The Cubs had a chance to clinch the division with a win, but lost to the Milwaukee Brewers.

"This is just the first step," Joe Maddon said. "I mean, we have much larger baseball fish to fry in our skillet."

It marks the first time the Cubs have won a division title since 2008.

"We've got a lot ahead of us. We really do," Theo Epstein said. "It kind of all boils down to how you perform in October."

"Just trying to keep guys fresh for the rest of the year," manager Joe Maddon said before Sunday's game against the San Francisco Giants. "It's no more complicated than that."
