John Henry: Red Sox Will Rely Less On Analytics

Feb 25, 2016 1:56 PM

Boston Red Sox principal owner John Henry revealed Wednesday that the club is de-emphasizing its reliance on analytics in making major decisions.

Henry made his decision on analytics based on the team's poor results in three of the last four seasons.

"I spent at least two months sort of looking under the hood, and came to the conclusion that we needed to make changes," Henry said. "One of the things that we've done — and I'm fully accountable for this — is we have perhaps overly relied on numbers, and there were a whole host of things.

"We have a very hands-on president of baseball operations [Dave Dombrowski] and a general manager [Mike Hazen] who worked extremely well together. We have made significant changes. The biggest thing is players on the field have to perform."

Sandoval: Red Sox Didn't Ask Me To Lose Weight

Feb 22, 2016 4:45 PM

Pablo Sandoval says no one from the Boston Red Sox asked him to lose weight this offseason.

The third baseman added that he hasn't weighed himself since October.

John Farrell said in January that Sandoval was "roughly 20 pounds lighter than the last game he played for us in 2015," but Sandoval didn't appear that much lighter Sunday.

"I don't weigh. I don't weigh in at all," Sandoval said. "I just do my work, try to do everything I can out there. I don't weigh at all in the whole offseason. I just try to get better, be in a better position and, like I say, be an athlete."

Farrell, coach Torey Lovullo and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski all have said that the team mandated he lose weight.

Pablo Sandoval Has 'Something To Prove' In 2016

Feb 22, 2016 7:20 AM

In a interview Sunday upon arriving at the Fenway South complex, Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval said no one from the team ever asked him to lose weight in the offseason, that he hasn't weighed himself since October, and that he has something to prove but isn't affected by his disastrous 2015 season.

Although manager John Farrell said in January that Sandoval was "roughly 20 pounds lighter than the last game he played for us in 2015," Sandoval didn't appear that much lighter Sunday.

"I don't weigh. I don't weigh in at all," Sandoval said after being asked how much weight he had lost. "I just do my work, try to do everything I can out there. I don't weigh at all in the whole offseason. I just try to get better, be in a better position and, like I say, be an athlete."

Pablo Sandoval Will Resume Switch-Hitting This Season

Feb 18, 2016 10:19 PM

Pablo Sandoval will resume switch-hitting as he enters his second season with the Boston Red Sox.

After recording just two hits in his first 41 at-bats from the right side, Sandoval hit lefty for the rest of the 2015 season.

"He went through some extensive work this past offseason, trying to get back to putting himself in a better position," John Farrell said. "He's revamped his right-handed swing. For those who are familiar with what that looked like last year, I think you'll see a difference when he gets here."

Hanley Ramirez Reports Early To Begin Work At First Base

Feb 18, 2016 10:20 PM

Hanley Ramirez reported to the Boston Red Sox six days ahead of the deadline for position players on Wednesday.

Ramirez, who looked leaner, said his weight is "a couple pounds" down from last year.

He is moving to first base and wants to win a Gold Glove in his first season at the position.

"Definitely," Ramirez said of wanting the hardware. "It would be nice, you know ... for you guys. We're going to work a lot. I just want to make my infielders comfortable. Catch the ball and throw it. That's the main key right now. I told Bogey [shortstop Xander Bogaerts] right away, 'Just throw the ball in this area and you'll be fine. Don't worry, I got you.' Pedey [second baseman Dustin Pedroia], he don't make bad throws. 'I'm always going to hit you in the chest.'"

The Red Sox signed Ramirez to a four-year, $88 million deal before the 2015 season.

Buchholz Isn't Ready To Discuss Extension With Red Sox

Feb 16, 2016 8:28 AM

Clay Buchholz enters 2016 without a guaranteed contract past this season.

The Boston Red Sox hold a club option for 2017 ($13.5 million) and Buchholz says he's not interested in working out an extension with the team this spring.

"I still think I have some stuff to prove before we even get into [extension discussions]," Buchholz said. "Being prepared and coming out and pitching to your capabilities, starting the days your name is on the lineup card and trying not to miss one of those starts -- that's big. I think if it all goes well through the first half of the season and I'm healthy going into the second half, then maybe [we can discuss an extension]. But I'm not going to press on that aspect of it. I'm going to try to cooperate with everybody and help this team win baseball games."

John Farrell has repeatedly said he wants Buchholz's priority to be on making 35 starts and pitching 200 innings.

MLBPA Forbids Cabrera, Cano, Ortiz From Caribbean HR Derby

Feb 2, 2016 3:55 PM

The Major League Baseball Players Association has forbid Miguel Cabrera, Robinson Cano and David Ortiz from participating in the Caribbean Series' inaugural Home Run Derby after it was announced that they would compete.

The organizers of the 2016 Caribbean Series had the idea of including a Home Run Derby on the third day of the tournament as a way to enhance the event.

"Unfortunately, the people in charge of the event didn't follow the necessary protocol to ensure that any major leaguers participating in an event like that one is protected from a possible injury," said Tony Clark, MLBPA's executive director.

"As a result, in order to protect the rights and interests of the players invited to compete, we were forced to advise those players and their representatives that participating in the event was not in their best interests."

According to the organizing committee, the MLBPA said it would need a financial guarantee to allow Ortiz, Cano and Cabrera to participate, and the request for their participation had to be made no later than Jan. 1.
