By Andrew Perna The Opsera is a statistic RealGM Executive Editor Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the rankings through the Sunday, July 8th games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes. 1. (1) New York Yankees - 4.23 They have a seven-game lead in the AL East. At this time last season, they trailed the Red Sox by a game. 2. (2) Texas Rangers - 4.20 Josh Hamilton has slowed down, but still has a line of .308/.380/.635 with 27 home runs and 75 RBI, both baseball bests. 3. (3) Washington Nationals - 4.08 This may not seem true, but the Nationals are fourteen games up on the Phillies in the NL East. 4. (4) Cincinnati Reds - 3.93 Joey Votto is raking, but has not gotten much attention -- .348/.471/.617 with 14 home runs and 48 RBI. 5. (5) St. Louis Cardinals - 3.84 They are averaging 4.95 runs and have an OPS of .775 without Albert Pujols. In 2011, St. Louis scored 4.7 runs per game with a .766 OPS. 6. (T11) Pittsburgh Pirates - 3.57 It would take a pretty drastic collapse for the Pirates to finish below .500. 8.
