Return to MLB Prospect index Conor Gillaspie - 3B Conor Gillaspie Scouting Report - Gillaspie was the 37th overall selection in the 2008 draft out of Wichita State; a compensation pick following the Phillies' signing of Pedro Feliz. - Born July 18th, 1987 in Omaha, Nebraska. - Son of Mark Gillaspie who was an All-American at Mississippi State. - Bats left and throws right. - Very good contact hitter that will use the entire field. - Doesn't have a lot of pop for a corner infielder and is unlikely to hit more than 10-15 homers per season. - A decent athlete but far from spectacular. - Gillaspie appears as though he can handle third base defensively but will never be a Gold Glove candidate. - His type of skills both offensively and defensively make an eventual move to 2B a viable option. - Gillaspie's OPS will probably top out at .850 during a career-best kind of season, but he can be a .315 kind of singles hitter. - His full potential is somewhere between a Wade Boggs and Todd Walker, with a heavy slant towards the latter. - In a move that showed very little rhyme and even less reason, the Giants called up Gillaspie in September of 2008 following just 24 minor league games in which he hit .269/.352/.344. - Undoubtedly is a hard worker who will maximize his gifts and represents the kind of high character ballplayer the Giants hope to cultivate in a system that has been a failure offensively for almost two decades.
