Yoenis Céspedes sought out a few teammates following Saturday's game to say goodbye, but he never told management he was deciding to opt out of the 2020 season.

Management had no inkling Céspedes was contemplating opting out.

“(We) definitely were not aware prior to the game or leading up to the game or until during the game that this was on the horizon,” said GM Brodie Van Wagenen. “It was surprising, without question.”

Céspedes' mother is ill and his calculations changed given the outbreaks with other teams.
