Albert Pujols, who has been limited defensively by foot injuries in recent years, is working at first base this spring to help make room for Shohei Ohtani at designated hitter.

While in Japan, Ohtani was the designated hitter for three games between starts. The Angels still haven't determined how exactly he'll be used in the Major Leagues.

"He's 23, and we have six years to work him into it," Arte Moreno said. "It's not like he needs to go right in there and pull the wagon. We have a lot of flexibility."

In 2017, Pujols started just six of his 149 games at first base. He hasn't played the position with real regularity since 2015.

"Albert's taking batting practice right now and has taken infield," Moreno said. "[Coach Dino Ebel] has been giving him infield [work] and said he looks strong. We won't know exactly what we're going to do until we see Albert play. But if we can get him into the field for 40-50 games, then Ohtani's going to have a lot of opportunity to bat."
