But the 40-somethings played a prominent role Saturday in getting their clubs into the postseason party. David Wells did not allow a baserunner to reach second base over six outstanding innings in the Padres' 3-1 victory at Arizona, while Greg Maddux worked seven solid frames in the Dodgers' 4-2 triumph over the Giants. The victories by the National League West Division rivals assured both teams a trip to the playoffs and ended the Phillies' wild card hopes despite their 4-3 victory over the Marlins.
