At 41- 27, things are a lot better than they were at the same time last year for the Baltimore Orioles, that much is clear. They still hold the division lead in the AL East. And, with Miguel Tejada and "Pleasant Surprise Of The Year" Brian Roberts heading the charge, they are at or near the top of the AL rankings in just about every offensive category. Their bullpen has done mostly an exceptional job, and their team ERA is at 4.10 to this point in the year. Not bad so far. But why, you ask, am I rattling off this list of statistics? Well, in spite of it all, there has been a continuing rally cry --by fans and local sportswriters alike -- for the Orioles to go out and get a big-name player or two to strengthen their chances of their first postseason since 1997. In particular, a top-tier No. 1 starter, and maybe also an outfielder or first baseman. All of this is not new strategy; why rest on your laurels, embracing complacency, when your ballclub can be better, and stronger? Fine. But manager Lee Mazilli does not deem any trades or acquisitions necessary... yet. And this writer, for one, is inclined to agree with the man.
