Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Mets pitcher Johan Santana are leading a group of active players who will attend Jose Lima's funeral services in New York on Thursday. Ortiz said he got permission from the Red Sox to take the day off, but hopes to be back in time for the team's game against the Royals on Thursday night. "I still can't believe that Lima is dead," Ortiz said. "I will say goodbye for the last time to one of the persons that has been closest to my heart since I began playing baseball." Ortiz is a former teammate of Lima with the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican winter league.
