National League All-Star manager Charlie Manuel has announced two replacements for the N.L. All-Star roster today in conjunction with Major League Baseball. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jonathan Broxton and San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain are unable to play in the 2009 All-Star Game. The replacement for Broxton is Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Trevor Hoffman, while the replacement for Cain is Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Zach Duke. Hoffman is 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA on the season, converting 20 saves in his 26 games. Hoffman, Major League Baseball?s all-time saves leader with 573 in his 17-year Major League career, has struck out 20 batters against just seven walks in his 26.1 innings pitched this year. It is the seventh career All-Star selection (previous: 1998-2000, 2002, 2006-07) for Hoffman, who joins teammates Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder in the 2009 Midsummer Classic. Duke is 8-8 with a 3.29 ERA for the Pirates in 2009. The left-hander has posted three complete games, including one shutout, in his 18 starts, spanning 120.0 innings pitched. This is Duke?s first career All-Star selection in his fifth Major League season. Duke joins teammate Freddy Sanchez as an All-Star selection.
