Both Miguel Cabrera and Gary Sheffield are hurting for the winless Tigers, according to ESPN.com. Sheffield tore a tendon in his right ring finger on Thursday while trying to stretch a single into a double against the Royals. "He would have not been able to hit if we came around to him in the ninth," Tigers' Manager Jim Leyland said. "I don't know how serious it was, but he couldn't bend it." Leyland did not expect Sheffield to play Friday afternoon. Cabrera did not play on Thursday because of a sprained left quadriceps muscle but could have filled in as the designated hitter. "He could hit, but he can't run, so I don't want to use him," Leyland said before the game. "He had some trouble with it over the winter, and it was sore during the spring, but I don't know if he hurt it during the rundown yesterday or what."
