The Chicago Cubs clinched the National League Central Division title Friday night with a 6-0 victory over Cincinnati and Milwaukee's 6-3 loss to San Diego to cap a stunning comeback that no one saw coming only a few months ago.
"These kids deserve it," manager Lou Piniella said. "They really let loose. I mean, let loose. It's good to see. They let loose a lot of emotion.
"It has been a rough summer for us. It hasn't been easy, believe me. But these kids endured, and they got the job done, and now they're letting loose and having fun. A few of them mentioned to me, 'Let's have a couple more of these before we're through.' "
Carlos Zambrano pitched seven shutout innings for his 18th victory, and Alfonso Soriano and Derrek Lee homered to lead the Cubs to their first postseason appearance since 2003.
