Moises Alou has started another farewell tour, but he does not know whether this will be the year he finally retires. At age 41, Alou has spent the last seven weeks proving that, when healthy, he can still be a dangerous offensive presence. He entered last night?s game against the Phillies on a 17-game hitting streak, during which he was batting .375 with 3 home runs and 14 runs scored, and has at least one hit in 28 of his 29 games with an at-bat since Aug. 8. ?A lot of guys have heard that this may be my last year, and they always ask me about it,? Alou said. ?They?ve told me: ?This can?t be your last year. Look at how you?re hitting. You can?t leave now.? I?ve always said that as long as I?m healthy, I have a lot of games left. But health-wise, desire-wise, I?m not sure yet.? When they signed him in November to a one-year deal with a team option for 2008, the Mets knew that Alou might be healthy for only half the season. He missed more than two months with a left quadriceps strain and has been bothered by discomfort in his knee, shoulder and forearm. But that was fine with them, as long as he was available to play during a pennant race.
