Brian Cashman, who has done so in the past, may have to play the bad guy when it comes to Derek Jeter next season.

Cashman essentially told Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada that they were done with the New York Yankees at the end of their respective careers.

He "may have to make a tough call before Jeter gets the chance to show whether he can still play shortstop in spring training next year," writes John Harper.

"Cash is in a tough spot," a rival executive said. "Jeter won't like it if they bring in a shortstop, but they have to do it. Even if Jeter works all winter to strengthen that ankle, he was moving so poorly when he was out there that it's bound to limit him in some ways.

"So he'll be a 40-year old shortstop who already had limited range. He may be able to help them with the bat, but not enough to justify playing short every day. If you're the GM, it's your responsibility to make the tough decision for the good of the ballclub."
