General manager Ken Williams has insisted the White Sox will do everything they can to try to re-sign free agent Paul Konerko to a multiyear deal. On Wednesday, manager Ozzie Guillen went a step further. Guillen said the Sox would trade current players under contract in order to get money together in order to get a deal done for the first baseman. "Right now we're in a great position to sign Paul Konerko. We're going to do everything in our power to sign this man," Guillen said Wednesday. "He's great for the city. I don't know about budgets, but if there's one guy we want back, it's Paulie. "If we have to move a couple guys to do that, trade a couple pitchers, we'll do that. Kenny and (board chairman) Jerry (Reinsdorf) will do everything they can to bring Paulie back." The Sox made the first move in trying to get Konerko back. Several sources indicated Konerko and his agent, Craig Landis, were sent a four-year, $52 million offer Wednesday. The Sox have exclusive rights to deal with Konerko until Friday, before he hits the free-agent market. While the money is close to what Konerko was expected to be offered, he indicated during the postseason a five-year deal would be his first option. All indications are Konerko will see what the market has to offer rather than jump on the deal put on the table by the Sox. The Los Angeles Angels are rumored to be a strong suitor for Konerko's services, as is Boston. The Daily Southtown reported last month, however, the Red Sox are an unlikely destination for Konerko. According to one White Sox player, Konerko had told several teammates he had no desire to play for Boston. "We were kidding with Paulie after the Boston series (the AL Division Series) that he'd better get used to playing in Fenway Park, and he said, 'You won't have to worry about that,' " the player said.
