President: D-Backs Will Be Able To Spend
Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers will have the ability to add payroll at the trade deadline.
Arizona president/CEO Derrick Hall told FOX Sports as much on Tuesday.
"We've got the flexibility," Hall said. "Our ownership group is willing to invest in this team. We've told KT, 'If we're in it, we'll do whatever it takes to support you.'"
Arizona opened the season with a payroll of $53.6 million, sixth-smallest in the majors.
Beltran Would OK Trade To Contender
Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran wouldn't object to a trade prior to baseball's July 31 non-waiver deadline.
Teammates Jose Reyes and Francisco Rodriguez has publicly stated that they would prefer to remain in New York.
"This is a business," Beltran told The New York Post.
He holds a full no-trade and can block any deal, but indicated he's willing to waive that clause should Mets general manager Sandy Alderson come up with the right deal.
"The team is always going to do what is best for the team, and as a player you have to make a decision if the trade makes sense or not," Beltran said.
Rays Willing To Add To Payroll
The Rays are contending in the American League East and it is possible that the team could add to their $41 million payroll in the coming month.
Baseball's non-waiver trade deadline is July 31.
"I can not imagine a time we wouldn't be in position to do that. Winning is still paramount to everything we do," Rays owner Stuart Sternberg said.
"Doing what's best for this organization is paramount to everything we do. ... That'll always be an option. But obviously we weigh that for what it means for future years, both what we're able to spend in future years and playes that we'll have in future years."
Brewers Looking To Improve Bench
The Brewers would like to strengthen their bench, according to sources.
Particularity, Milwaukee is looking for a right-handed hitter.
Their bullpen is expected to be fortified when Takashi Saito comes off the disabled list, possibly this weekend.
Tigers Open To Moving Reliever Thomas
The Tigers are open to trading left-handed reliever Brad Thomas, according to a source.
Detroit has been attempting to gauge interest in Thomas as of late.
The Tigers have a surplus of left-handers in their bullpen.
Hiroki Kuroda Drawing Trade Interest
The Dodgers are willing to trade pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and he has drawn interest on the market.
A major-league source told Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com that "a lot of clubs" are showing interest in the right-hander.
In fact, the Reds and Rockies had scouts present at Kuroda's most recent outing, though it's not clear if they were there to see him in particular.
Rangers Downplay Interest In K-Rod, Beltran
Rangers president Nolan Ryan downplayed reports Monday that the club is eyeing Mets veterans Carlos Beltran and Francisco Rodriguez as the trade market begins to heat up.
"I can't believe that we have an interest in either," Ryan told 103.3 FM's Galloway and Company.
The Mets won two of three in Arlington over the weekend and climbed above .500.
"I don't see that's an upgrade" to the Rangers' bullpen, Ryan said. "And Beltran, you worry about his knee. And you're taking on an awful lot of salary."
