The Colorado Rockies will acquire Jason Marquis from the Chicago Cubs for reliever Luis Vizcaino, according to a baseball source with knowledge of the clubs? discussions. With Marquis, 30, due to make $9.875 million next season in the final year of his contract, the Cubs felt they had to move him to gain payroll flexibility necessary to accomplish other roster needs. If Vizcaino rebounds and helps the Cubs, fine, but the Cubs will accomplish their objective of moving Marquis and freeing up about $5 million.

At one point this winter, the Red Sox made a play to re-acquire Marlins superstar Hanley Ramirez, league sources tell SI.com. The Marlins were said to be most interested in a centerfielder, and it's believed that Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz were among those mentioned in a potential package for Ramirez, who began in Boston's organization before being traded to the Marlins after the 2005 season in the deal that sent Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to the Red Sox. It was originally believed that these recent discussions came after Boston lost out in the running for Mark Teixeira, who signed an eight-year, $180 million deal with the Yankees last week, but in fact, they were held a few weeks prior to that.

The Mets and Dodgers discussed a deal involving outfielder Andruw Jones at the winter meetings, but New York's interest has reportedly dwindled. A person familiar with those previous discussions said Monday "nothing is ongoing, and nothing [no trade] is going to happen." The Mets had reportedly approached the Dodgers about a trade built around second baseman Luis Castillo-for-Jones.

The Orioles and Rangers discussed a trade involving Hank Blalock during the winter meetings. Blalock would play first base and DH for Baltimore.

It has become much less likely that the Padres will trade ace Jake Peavy this offseason, but the organization is still willing to listen to offers. Both CEO Sandy Alderson and General Manager Kevin Towers have said the club will still listen to inquiries. Intense negotiations with the Cubs regarding Peavy reportedly broke down last month.

The Yankees are looking to move two from a group of outfielders of Xavier Nady, Nick Swisher, and Hideki Matsui. The Angels, Texas, Oakland, and Atlanta are considered to have interest.

The Angels, after losing out on Mark Teixeira, could make a play for Hideki Matsui to bolster their lineup. The Yankees have more players than needed in the outfield and at designated hitter. Xavier Nady is another name that has been floated around in trade rumors, and the Braves appear interested. The signing of Teixeira has made Matsui, Nady and Nick Swisher somewhat expendable.

The Red Sox are interested in acquiring a catcher, possibly Miguel Montero of Arizona or Jarrod Saltalamacchia of the Rangers. According to major league sources, Red Sox special assistant Allard Baird watched Saltalamacchia on his worst defensive night in winter ball although other scouts who watched him regularly thought he was fine behind the plate.

The arrival of Mark Teixeira in New York could mean that the Yankees will look to trade Hideki Matsui in order to trim their swelling payroll. If not Matsui, then possibly Nick Swisher, who they acquired from the White Sox mere weeks ago. Swisher was slotted to start at first, with Matsui likely occupying the designated hitter spot for the Yankees, but the Teixeira signing chances that. New York now has both Matsui and Swisher to decide between at designated hitter, with Matsui an unlikely option in left field because of his bulky knee.

The Angels could soon make another attempt to engage the Padres in trade talks for pitcher Jake Peavy. However, Los Angeles isn't likely to part with their young arms, which San Diego would undoubtedly want. The Angels would probably have to give the Padres at least one of the following: Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Jered Weaver. That makes the likelihood of a trade relatively low.
