Pirates Hire Derek Shelton As New Manager

The Pirates completed their leadership makeover Wednesday, hiring Derek Shelton to be their new manager.

Shelton had spent the past two seasons as the Twins' bench coach. His previous stops include a season as the quality control coach for the Blue Jays in 2017 and seven years as a hitting coach with the Rays. Shelton broke into the majors as hitting coach for the Indians from 2005 to 2009, and he has managed in the Yankees' minor league system.

The Atlanta Braves signed catcher Travis d'Arnaud to a two-year, $16 million contract on Sunday, the team announced.

The 30-year-old d'Arnaud split last season between the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays. After struggling to hit with both the Mets and Dodgers, d'Arnaud rebounded with the Rays, hitting .263 with 16 home runs and 67 RBIs.

White Sox, Jose Abreu Agree Upon New Three-Year, $50M Deal

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a new three-year, $50 million deal with Jose Abreu.

Abreu led the American League with 123 RBIs last season while batting .284 with 33 home runs.

The slugger had signed a one-year, $17.8 million qualifying offer last week, choosing to forgo free agency.

Under the new deal, Abreu will receive a $5 million signing bonus, $11 million in 2020, $16 million in 2021 and $18 million in 2022, with $4 million deferred. He turns 33 in January.

Yasmani Grandal, White Sox Agree To Four-Year, $73M Contract

Yasmani Grandal and the Chicago White Sox have agreed to a four-year, $73 million contract.

The contract is the largest in White Sox history.

"He's such a quality guy," White Sox president Ken Williams said of Grandal. "And for him to understand our messaging, our goals, our path, and to say, 'I want to be a part of that and I'm going to commit to it early so we can move on to the next thing heading into the winter meetings,' [it] just shows what kind of character we're talking about."

Last offseason, Grandal turned down a $17.9 million qualifying offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers and reportedly declined a four-year, $60 million offer from the New York Mets.

Grandal instead signed a one-year, $18.25 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Harris spent seven years in the Cubs' front office and was named their assistant GM in January of last year. He has long been seen as a future GM and was an integral part of the Cubs' recent rise.

"We're thrilled to be able to bring in an executive of Scott's caliber to help lead our Baseball Operations group," president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said in a statement.
