A's Give Long-Term Extensions To Beane, Frost, And Melvin

The Oakland A's have reached long-term agreements with Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Billy Beane, General Manager David Forst and Manager Bob Melvin, the club announced today. 

"I'm proud of the tremendous success of our team under the leadership of Billy, David and Bob and am excited to have that continue for years to come," said Oakland A's Managing General Partner John Fisher. 

Beane was elevated to his current post as Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations on Oct. 5, 2015 after serving 18 seasons as General Manager. Under his watch, the A's have compiled a 1793-1607 (.527) record over the last 21 years, which is the fourth-best record in the American League and seventh best in all of baseball during that time frame. 

Forst will be entering his 20th season in the Athletics organization and his fourth as General Manager after being appointed to the position on Oct. 5, 2015. The A's have made nine postseason appearances since he joined the organization in 2000, including four times in the last seven seasons. 

Melvin led the A's to the fourth best record in the Majors (97-65) and a postseason berth this season.

The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a $2.61 million signing bonus with 16-year-old Cuban pitching prospect Sandy Gaston.

The deal is pending a physical.

A hard-throwing right-hander, Gaston is considered one of the top international free-agent prospects and received attention from several teams, including the Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles.

The future of Marlins baseball -- Victor Victor Mesa and Victor Mesa Jr. -- sat onstage Monday wearing wide smiles and white Marlins uniforms.

They were flanked by equally happy Marlins CEO Derek Jeter and president of baseball operations Mike Hill as the two announced the signings of the Mesa brothers, top international free-agent outfielders from Cuba. The Mesas were declared free agents by Major League Baseball, and the Marlins were widely viewed as front-runners to sign them.

Bell agreed to a three-year contract with a team option for 2022. He will introduced at a news conference Monday.

Rangers Name Shiraz Rehman Assistant GM

The Texas Rangers have hired Shiraz Rehman as assistant general manager after he spent the past seven years in baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs.

Rehman will assist Rangers general manager Jon Daniels in the day-to-day management of major league operations, including player acquisitions, roster management, player contracts and salary arbitration.
