The Tigers released their 60-man player pool for Summer Camp on Sunday and Torkelson wasn't on it.

Cubs Agree To Deal With First-Rounder Ed Howard

Jun 22, 2020 8:53 AM

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a deal with Ed Howard, the 16th overall pick in the Major League draft.

The deal is still being finalized, but Howard's slot value was $3,745,500.

Howard is a graduate of Chicago's Mount Carmel High School.

"I was looking forward to it. I wanted to be a hometown kid," Howard said after being selected. "I'm excited it's with the Cubs. I think that's a great organization. I watch a lot of Cubs games, follow them, know a lot of their players and things like that, so I’m excited to be a hometown guy. It's special."

Mets Draft Two-Time Cancer Survivor In Fifth Round

Jun 12, 2020 7:16 AM

The New York Mets took University of New Orleans pitcher Eric Orze in the fifth round, 150th overall, of baseball's amateur draft on Thursday night.

Orze is a two-time cancer survivor.

The 22-year-old missed part of the 2018 season and all of 2019 to recover from multiple operations while fighting off testicular cancer and skin cancer.

"This is a kid that will not quit. He really won't," Mets vice president of international and amateur scouting Tommy Tanous said.

"Our scouts fell in love with his split-finger, to tell you the truth. He throws a heavy, heavy fastball and he uses that split as his out pitch, his strikeout pitch. He accumulated tremendous numbers this year, and we felt it was a great value there. To get that kind of arm with that kind of out pitch there was a great way to end the draft. So, obviously, this is a high-makeup kid, high-quality kid who happens to have a really gifted pitch."

Tigers Take Spencer Torkelson With No. 1 Pick

Jun 10, 2020 9:02 PM

The Detroit Tigers used the first overall pick in Wednesday night's amateur draft on Arizona State slugger Spencer Torkelson.

Torkelson is the first college first baseman and the first right-handed-hitting first baseman ever selected with the first overall pick.

He played first base at Arizona State, but the Tigers announced him as a third baseman.

"We know he can play first, but our scouts strongly feel that he can play third base, and that's our intent at this point," Tigers general manager Al Avila said. "He's exactly the type of player we hoped would be there with the first pick. At this point, we're going to send him out as a third baseman."

Shortened MLB Draft To Remain In New Jersey

Jun 1, 2020 8:40 AM

Major League Baseball's shortened draft will remain at the MLB Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey, for the first round on June 10.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the draft had been scheduled to take place in Omaha, Nebraska, before the now-canceled College World Series.

The league shortened the selections to five rounds and 160 picks in response to the coronavirus pandemic. It will be by far the fewest number of picks since the draft started in 1965.

The first 37 picks will take place on the opening day and the remainder on June 11.
