Scott Boras: Setting Draft Limits Sends 'Wrong Message'

Mar 30, 2020 8:36 AM

Scott Boras doesn't agree with the agreement reached between Major League Baseball and the players' union to possibly shorten the draft and limit the financial pool for amateur players.

Under terms of the agreement, Rob Manfred has the discretion to shorten the 2020 draft from 40 rounds to as few as five rounds, according to sources.

"For owners to do this to these young men, who are so passionate about baseball, is something that they need to examine their conscience," Boras said. "More kids will have to go to [college]. And anyone not taken among the top 200 players will have to go back to school."

Players drafted in 2020 will get only $100,000 of their bonus this year. The remaining amount will be split into payments made in July 2021 and July 2022, according to sources.

"I'm a big proponent of college, so I want these kids to get their education, but what really bothers me is that kids outside the fifth round deserve their bonuses," Boras added. "And now they're freezing their [bonuses] for the next two years, and are paying them late."

MLB Draft Likely To Be Held In July, May Be Shortened

Mar 27, 2020 8:25 AM

The Major League Baseball draft is likely to be moved to July, though it could be shortened and include bonus deferrals, according to sources.

There have been cash-flow questions, which has prompted a number of owners to question whether the 2020 draft should be canceled altogether.

Discussions between MLB and the MLB Players Association have centered on a compromise that would see a draft between five and 10 rounds and signing bonuses with a small up-front payment and larger amounts due in July 2021 and July 2022, according to sources.

MLB May Skip 2020 Draft To Save Money During Shutdown

Mar 23, 2020 8:51 AM

Major League Baseball is shut down indefinitely because of the threat the coronavirus has become.

MLB and the MLBPA will have a lot of issues to iron out once play does resume and one of them is the 2020 amateur draft, which is currently scheduled for June 10.

To mitigate the financial hit taken during the shutdown, MLB is considering skipping the draft altogether. Teams spend approximately $400 million combined on draft bonuses each year, plus associated scouting costs.
