Pete Alonso Wins 2021 Home Run Derby

Jul 13, 2021 5:56 PM

Pete Alonso won the Home Run Derby for the second consecutive year after winning it in 2019.

“I’m a power hitter, and I think I’m the best power hitter on the planet,” he said. “Being able to showcase that and really put on a fun display for fans, it’s truly a dream come true for me, because when I was younger my parents let me stay up past my bedtime to watch this.”

Alonso will receive $1 million in prize money as well. Alonso made the $555,000 minimum as a rookie in 2019, and his salary now is just $676,775.

Alonso smashed 74 homers in all, and topped Mancini’s final-round 22 with 31 seconds to spare.

Jacob deGrom Skipping All-Star Game

Jul 8, 2021 9:56 AM

Jacob deGrom will not be attending the All-Star Game at Coors Field.

The New York Mets right-hander will instead spend time with his family and rest for the second half.

"I've thought about it and obviously being named to an All-Star Game is a great honor but I'm just going to take that time and spend it with my family and get healthy for the second half," deGrom said.

deGrom, who was the first-place Mets' lone All-Star selection, lobbied for teammate Taijuan Walker to take his place in the game.

"He's 100% deserving to go," deGrom said of Walker, who is 7-3 with a 2.44 ERA in his first season with the Mets.

Shohei Ohtani Will Pitch, Hit In All-Star Game

Jul 6, 2021 9:31 AM

Shohei Ohtani plans to hit and pitch in next week's All-Star Game, according to Joe Maddon.

The Los Angeles Angels manager said he spoke to American League manager Kevin Cash about Ohtani doing both.

"The conclusion is that he will pitch, but how it's going to happen has not been concluded," Maddon said. "There's different ways to do it, obviously. He could start the game or come in game-in-progress."

This past weekend, Ohtani -- who leads the Major Leagues in homers -- became the first player in baseball history to be selected for an All-Star Game as both a hitter and a pitcher.
