Rockies' Trevor Story To Enter Home Run Derby

Jun 29, 2021 9:14 AM

Trevor Story announced Monday that he will take part in the Home Run Derby at Coors Field.

Story joins a field that thus far includes Shohei Ohtani, Pete Alonso and Trey Mancini.

The Colorado Rockies shortstop is in the final year of his contract and has been the subject of trade rumors.

"I've always wanted to do it under the right circumstances, and things just lined up for me, with the hometown club here in Denver, in a park that I'm familiar with," Story said. "It's always been on my radar. I had an opportunity earlier in my career to do it, and I thought now is the time to do it."

Joe Maddon OK If Shohei Ohtani Chooses To Hit, Pitch In ASG

Jun 15, 2021 8:32 AM

It seems possible that Shohei Ohtani could be asked to hit and pitch in next month's All-Star Game at Coors Field.

Ohtani leads American League designated hitters in fan votes by a wide margin and has also put together a great season on the mound.

Joe Maddon, who has made it a point to ease most of Ohtani's prior restrictions, wouldn't be against it.

"Just depends on his day," the Los Angeles Angels manager said. "It's just an inning, and I know that if he's able to do that, I would have no objections to it. His schedule's been great, the number of innings pitched, how many pitches he's thrown I think is in really good order. I don't see a dramatic spike between now and then. It would just be how he feels and what he thinks about it. I think that would be the way to determine that.

"The fact that he's such an unusual participant, definitely would like to hear what he has to say about it."

Ohtani has a 2.85 ERA with 68 strikeouts and 28 walks in 47⅓ innings through his first nine starts. He also entered Monday with a .961 OPS and 17 home runs, the latter tied for fifth most in the majors.
