Selig 'Frustrated' By A's Stadium Issues

Sep 18, 2014 5:18 AM

Bud Selig still believes the Oakland Athletics desperately need a new ballpark.

Selig will end his lengthy run as commissioner early next year with the situation remaining unsettled, which has him "frustrated."

"This is always something I wanted to get resolved before I leave office, which is another 5½ or six months," Selig said, citing litigation as the current snag. "I've always said the local club, they know their market best."

Selig praised all parties after the A's recently reached a 10-year lease agreement with the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority to stay at the rundown Coliseum.

At the January 2012 owners' meetings, Selig said the Bay Area situation was on the "front burner." He appointed a committee in March 2009 to study the issues facing the teams, but never ruled on the matter.

"I know there's been criticism about the length this has taken. I'm proud of everything we've done the last 22 years, but this is one of those things as I look back on it, however, it's complicated, it's very complicated," Selig said. "Now we have litigation, so everything is now on hold. That's just a fact of life once we get in litigation. But let me say at the outset, this team needs a new ballpark. ... Once the litigation's resolved, then we'll all proceed."

Orioles Earn Court Victory Over Nationals In TV Dispute

Oct 31, 2014 8:40 AM

The Baltimore Orioles have earned a victory in court in their dispute with the Washington Nationals over annual broadcast payments.

A New York Supreme Court judge on Monday granted an extension in the injunction preventing Major League Baseball from forcing the Orioles to pay the Nationals higher payments from their joint ownership in the network that televises games.

The Orioles own a controlling stake in MASN, which broadcasts Nationals games as a result of an agreement when the team moved from Montreal to Washington.

The Nationals want higher annual rights payments.

Senator Urges Indians To Change Name, Mascot

Sep 18, 2014 2:15 AM

Ohio senator Eric Kearney, a Democrat from Cincinnati, is urging the Cleveland Indians to change both their name and mascot.

Kearney introduced a resolution Wednesday that would encourage the baseball team to adopt a new name and mascot, citing racial insensitivity. He also sent a letter to Indians owner Larry Dolan calling for change.

American Indians and others have protested the use of the logo for years at the team's annual home opener, complaining that the mascot mocks them and their heritage.

MLB officials have contacted the DEA and U.S. Attorney's office in Southern Florida in an effort to unmask the names of any players who might have violated the league's drug policy, sources told ESPN's "Outside the Lines."
