Schilling's Gaming Company Lays Off Staff

Sep 25, 2014 1:02 AM

Curt Schilling's struggling video game company, which received a $75 million loan guarantee to move to Rhode Island in 2010, has laid off its entire staff. An email sent by the 38 Studios company to workers says they were notified of the "non-voluntary and non-disciplinary" layoffs on Thursday. 38 Studios moved from Massachusetts after Rhode Island agreed to back the loan. Officials said the deal would bring hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars of tax revenue. "The company is experiencing an economic downturn," the email read. "To avoid further losses ... the company has decided that a companywide layoff is absolutely necessary." The company had 300 employees in Providence. It also has an office in Maryland. It released its much-anticipated first game, "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning," to strong reviews in February.

Yankees Deny Reports Of Possible Sale

Oct 27, 2014 11:42 PM

The Yankees are strongly denying a New York Daily News report that the team may soon be put up for sale by the Steinbrenner family. "The Yankees have never engaged in any sales talks with any banks," team president Randy Levine told Darren Rovell of CNBC. The team doesn't have to engage in talks with banks as others do because it has no debt. "I just read the Daily News story. It is complete fiction," Hal Steinbrenner said. "Me and my family have no intention to sell the Yankees and expect it to be in the family for years to come."

Sources: Yankees Could Be For Sale

May 11, 2014 1:30 PM

Rumors are swirling around baseball that the Yankees could soon be put up for sale by the Steinbrenner family. The family has owned the Major League franchise since Cleveland shipbuilder George Steinbrenner purchased the club for $8.8 million in 1973. Multiple baseball and finance sources told the New York Daily News that the team could be put on the block in the wake of the record sale price of $2.175 billion the Dodgers went for in April. "There has been chatter all around the banking and financial industries in the city for a couple of weeks now," one high-level baseball source told The Daily News.

Schilling's Firm Makes $1.1M Payment To Rhode Island

Sep 20, 2014 10:58 PM

Curt Schilling's video game company has made a $1.1 million payment to the state of Rhode Island and now should seek out private financing to stay afloat. "There's no more easy money," Gov. Lincoln Chafee said. The company, 38 Studios, missed a scheduled payment to the Rhode Island Economic Development Corp. on May 1 and has told the state it could not meet its payroll this week. 38 Studios hand-delivered a check to the economic agency on Thursday only to have the chief financial officer acknowledge soon after there wasn't enough money in the account to cover it. The $1.1 million payment was made on Friday and the check cleared.
