Torre, Caruso Withdraw Bid For Dodgers

Joe Torre and real estate developer Rick Caruso have bowed out of their joint bid to purchase the Dodgers, The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPNLosAngeles.com that Caruso pulled out because of owner Frank McCourt's refusal to include or negotiate the parking lots as part of the sale.

Pirates President Frank Coonelly Faces DUI Charges

Pirates president Frank Coonelly faces four drunken driving-related charges after an incident on Dec. 22 in suburban Pittsburgh. Coonelly arrived Thursday at the Pirates' training complex, but did not speak with reporters. The team issued a statement from Coonelly and Bob Nutting, the Pirates' principal owner. "My actions that evening were irresponsible and wrong," Coonelly said.

O'Malley Reportedly Out As Bidder For Dodgers

Peter O'Malley has withdrawn his bid to buy the Dodgers, according to two people familiar with the situation. The decision means the O'Malley family will not reclaim ownership of the team it guided for nearly half a century. The Dodgers won all six of their World Series titles under the family.

Hall Of Fame Catcher Gary Carter Dies At 57

Gary Carter, the Hall of Fame catcher who helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series, died Thursday at age 57. "I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 pm.," his daughter Kimmy Bloemers wrote on the family's website. "This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know. He is in heaven and has reunited with his mom and dad. I believe with all my heart that dad had a STANDING OVATION as he walked through the gates of heaven to be with Jesus."

Report: Revised Bids For Dodgers Sought

The remaining 11 bidders for the Dodgers have been asked to submit revised bids and supporting information within a week, sources familiar with the process said, according to the Los Angeles Times. Once the bids are reviewed, more bidders will be cut from the pool and the remainder will be forwarded to MLB for its approval, according to the report.

Filing: Wilpons Were Warned About Madoff's High Returns

A former executive for a hedge fund started by the owners of the Mets warned them almost a decade ago that Bernard Madoff had to be doing something illegal to gain such high returns, according to court documents. Noreen Harrington quit her job as chief investment officer of Wilpon-owned Sterling Stamos in protest in 2003. That came after the Wilpon-owned funds placed money with a Madoff feeder fund over her strenuous objections, the trustee suing the Wilpons for $386 million claims.

Police: Clyburn Shot, Killed In South Carolina

Former Major League outfielder Danny Clyburn Jr. has been shot and killed in his South Carolina hometown, according to police. Officers found the 37-year-old in the front yard of his home early Tuesday morning. Witnesses told police they saw Clyburn arguing with Derrick Lamont McIlwain shortly before Clyburn was shot. McIlwain turned himself in to authorities later Tuesday and was charged with murder. Clyburn was a second-round pick of the Pirates in 1992 and played parts of three seasons in the majors with the Orioles and Rays in the late 1990s.

Police: Woman Extorted Yankees' Brian Cashman

A woman has been charged with stalking and shaking down Yankees GM Brian Cashman. Louise Neathway was arraigned Thursday night in Manhattan Criminal Court. Prosecutors said she extorted $6,000 from Cashman, tried to squeeze $15,000 more and engaged in "a long-term effort to control and manipulate" him.
