Mets Set MLB Record With 106 Hit Batters

Sep 22, 2022 7:39 AM

The New York Mets have set a Major League record with 106 hit batters this season.

New York has been hit one more time than the 2021 Cincinnati Reds.

The mark was set when Mark Canha was hit twice and Luis Guillorme once in Wednesday's 6-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

"It's like a broken record at this point," Canha said. "We just kind of roll our eyes when it happens now and move on. There's nothing you can do except capitalize on it, make it hurt, and it's all you can do. Yeah, sure, we're frustrated. It's like not a great thing to happen to your team."

Buck Showalter has repeatedly complained about the amount of times his players have been hit.

"I'm closer to the plate and I don't move," Canha said. "We have a lot of good hitters, dangerous hitters, and you have to pitch good hitters in, and we tend to get hit a lot."

A record 2,112 batters were hit last year, topping the 1,984 in 2019. Batters were hit 1,875 times entering Wednesday with two weeks remaining.

Albert Pujols On Retirement Plans: 'I'm Not Chasing Anything'

Sep 21, 2022 8:31 AM

Albert Pujols won't waver on his decision to retire after the 2022 season.

The 42-year-old is confident in his decision despite a second-half power surge that has him at 698 home runs with the regular season winding down.

"I think [Yadier Molina] and myself could play a couple of more years if we decided to do that, but at the end of the day, you have to go with your heart," Pujols said.

"For myself, I said it in Spring Training and said it early because I knew something like this was going to happen. I knew if I had a good year, or a lot of success, people thought I would change my mind. But when I say something, I will do it. So, I'm going to retire after the World Series, enjoy my life, my career and my family."

On the subject of home runs, Pujols scoffed at the notion that he is "chasing" 700 home runs.

"I'm not chasing anything," he said adamantly. "That's something [the media] is playing with. I've never chased any numbers and 22 years later I'm definitely not going to chase anything. In my career, I've been so blessed with everything that I've accomplished in my life.

"What I'm chasing right now is another ring," Pujols continued. "That's what I'm chasing for the city of St. Louis and for our fans and that's why I signed back this year. Going back to St. Louis, I knew we were going to have a great ballclub and hopefully get the chance [to win a championship] and hopefully finish this chapter that I started 21 years ago."

Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina Make Record 325th Start As Battery

Sep 15, 2022 8:09 AM

Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina made their 325th career start together for the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night, setting a Major League record for the most as a battery.

The pair eclipsed the regular-season mark of 324 by the Detroit Tigers pair of Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan from 1963-1975.

"It's probably cooler for me than Yadi," Wainwright said. "He has so many cool things. Next to the Roberto Clemente award, this is probably the coolest thing of my career."

Towels with the No. 325 were given out to fans as they entered the ballpark on Wednesday.

Molina, 40, has indicated he will retire at the end of this season. Wainwright, 41, has yet to make a decision on his future.

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. Hits 100th Home Run

Sep 15, 2022 8:02 AM

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. hit the 100th home run of his career in the Toronto Blue Jays' 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.

Guerrero homered off Drew Rasmussen in the first inning, his 28th home run this season. At 23 years, 182 days, he is the youngest Blue Jays player to reach 100 homers.

Guerrero said he planned to give his Hall of Fame father the ball from his milestone home run.

"He's going to feel very proud of me," he said through an interpreter. "When your son does something like that, I'm sure any dad would feel proud."

Guerrero reached the 100-homer mark two years younger than his father, but Vlad Sr. did it in 438 games to Jr.'s 486.

Julio Rodriguez Joins Elite 25-25 Club

Sep 15, 2022 7:57 AM

Julio Rodriguez stole his 25th base of the season on Wednesday, strengthening his Rookie of the Year campaign.

Rodriguez is the third rookie in league history to have at least 25 steals and 25 homers in their first season.

However, unlike Chris Young in 2007 and Mike Trout in 2012, Rodriguez reached the 25/25 plateau in his debut season. Both Young and Trout reached the Major Leagues late in the previous season, but were still considered rookies.

With his steal, Rodriguez also became just the fourth player to reach 25 home runs and 25 stolen bases in a season at 21 years old or younger.

Mike Trout Extends Home Run Streak To Seven Games

Sep 13, 2022 8:21 AM

Mike Trout homered in his seventh consecutive game on Monday night, one shy of the Major League record.

The Los Angeles Angels lost 5-4 to the Cleveland Guardians in the contest.

Trout's 35th homer of the season came in the fifth inning off Konnor Pilkington.

Dale Long of the Pittsburgh Pirates established the record of eight straight games with a home run in 1956. Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees matched it in 1987, as did the Seattle Mariners' Ken Griffey Jr. in 1993.

"That's good company to be in," Trout said. "I'm just putting a good swing on the ball and they're going out."

Christian Yelich Hits Longest Home Run Since 2019

Sep 7, 2022 8:07 AM

Christian Yelich connected on a 499-foot home run in the Milwaukee Brewers' 10-7 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

It was the third-longest home run since Statcast started tracking homers in 2015 -- Nomar Mazara hit a 505-foot shot in 2019 and Giancarlo Stanton hit a 504-footer at Colorado in 2016.

"That's kind of just one of those ones where everything kind of lines up for you and you catch it in a really good spot," Yelich said. "Oddly enough, my first homer here in nine or 10 times playing. So I guess if you're going to wait that long make it count."

Yelich joked that Statcast should have just made the distance a nice, round 500 feet.

"At least give me the extra foot," he said with a smile.
