Justin Verlander Passes Curt Schilling, Bob Gibson On Strikeouts List

Jul 18, 2022 8:16 AM

Justin Verlander earned his Major League-leading 12th win on Saturday, moving up the all-time strikeout list in the process.

He's pitching at an elite level after missing nearly two years due to Tommy John surgery.

"I've said the word 'perspective' here a lot, and I don't take it for granted," he said. "I think in the past I took a lot of things for granted, my health and some success when I was young, certainly not since I've been an Astro. But I think age and going through some stuff has a way to help you grow up and realize some real positives that maybe you wouldn't have taken a moment to realize before."

Verlander, who leads all active players in strikeouts, now has 3,121 in his career, moving him past Curt Schilling (3,116) and Bob Gibson (3,117) into 14th place on the all-time list.

Orioles Win Eighth-Straight For First Time Since 2005

Jul 11, 2022 8:12 AM

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-5 on Sunday afternoon, cruising to their eight-straight victory.

It marked their first four-game sweep of the Angels since 2003. The Orioles hadn't won eight consecutive games in a season since April 22 to May 1, 2005.

Baltimore has lost more than 100 games in three of the last four seasons.

"I've been waiting for a week like this for a long time, for most of my career," Trey Mancini said. "It's something that I certainly don't take for granted. We're just having a really good time in here, playing so well as a team."

The Orioles are just one game under .500 (43-44) and two games back in the American League Wild Card race.

Max Scherzer Strikes Out 11 In Return To Mets

Jul 6, 2022 8:48 AM

Max Scherzer returned to the New York Mets on Tuesday night, striking out 11 over six scoreless innings.

The Mets eventually lost to 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds.

Scherzer had last started for the Mets on May 18, when he left his start in the sixth inning and went on the injured list with an oblique strain. He tossed 79 pitches against the Reds.

"Felt great," Scherzer said. "No issues whatsoever today. Felt strong all the way through. It never tightened up on me. ... Most importantly, I felt like I had a really good slider tonight. During my rehab starts, my slider wasn't really breaking the right way. In my bullpen, I felt I found something with my slider, and I knew I would need it tonight against this team and was able to execute that."

Byron Buxton Starts First 8-5 Triple Play In History

Jul 5, 2022 8:05 AM

Byron Buxton, Gio Urshela and the Minnesota Twins made Major League history on Monday night.

During the seventh inning of the Twins' 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox, Buxton caught a deep fly ball at the right-center field wall and threw into the infield, where third baseman Urshela put out a pair of unaware baserunners to complete the first 8-5 triple play on record.

The SABR database tracks every triple play dating back to 1876.

"I don't know how much more stuff can be a first in MLB history, so at least it was something left for us in the middle age to kind of grab, I guess," Buxton said. "It's cool. Ain't too much thought into it other than the triple play got us out of the inning and it kind of got us a little momentum going."

The feat also marked the 16th triple play in Twins history, and the second involving only two players.
