May 18, 2021 8:51 AM

Gerrit Cole issued a walk for the first time in more than a month Monday night, but he still set a Major League record.

Cole set the Major League record for most consecutive strikeouts without a walk, breaking a mark Corbin Burnes set just last week.

Burnes collected 58 Ks without a walk to start the season. Cole had 61 strikeouts over a 41 2/3-inning walk-less stretch.

Shane Bieber's Record Strikeout Steak Ends

May 17, 2021 9:01 AM

Shane Bieber had struck out at least eight in 20 straight games before he fanned just seven against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Bieber was pulled after issuing his fourth walk and finished his shortest outing of the season at 4 2/3 innings.

"You have to ride the highs with the lows. And today, I'm frustrated that I wasn't able to go out there and do what I know I'm capable of doing," he said. "Objectively, the bullpen did a phenomenal job saving me there, and we almost scratched one out."

Bieber leads the majors with 92 strikeouts after starting the season with 10 or more in his first four outings, another Major League record.

Brewers' Corbin Burnes Sets Mark For Strikeouts Without A Walk

May 14, 2021 8:27 AM

Corbin Burnes set the record for strikeouts without a walk to start the season Thursday, extending the mark to 58 before walking a batter against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth inning.

The Milwaukee Brewers right-hander, 26, needed three strikeouts to pass the previous record of 51 strikeouts without a walk held by Kenley Jansen, set in 2017.

"It was pretty cool," Burnes said of the ovation from the crowd. "Whenever you get them standing behind you like that, cheering you on, it definitely gives you some chills. Was a cool moment to do it at home."

His strikeout total reached nine for the game through the fourth inning to set another Major League record -- strikeouts without a walk at any point in a season.

Burnes' streaks ended, however, in the fifth inning when he walked the Cardinals' Tommy Edman.

John Means Pitches No-Hitter, Just Misses Perfect Game

May 6, 2021 8:36 AM

John Means pitched a no-hitter for the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday in one of the greatest pitching performances in club history.

Means retired all 27 batters he faced in a 6-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, but he did allow a baserunner when Sam Haggerty reached on a third-strike wild pitch in the third inning. The Orioles then caught Haggerty attempting to steal second base, but the wild pitch nullifies the perfect game bid.

Means is believed to be the first pitcher in Major League history to lose a perfect game on a third-strike wild pitch.

He is the first Oriole to throw an individual no-hitter since Jim Palmer in 1969.

Corey Kluber Strikes Out 10 To Earn 100th Win

May 3, 2021 7:56 AM

Corey Kluber struck out 10 batters for the 100th victory of his Major League career as the New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

It was his most dominant performance since 2018. Before last month, Kluber had pitched one inning since May 1, 2019, due to a broken forearm when hit by a comebacker and a torn shoulder muscle.

Kluber's fastball was "only" 91 mph, but he induced 18 swinging strikes -- 13 alone on 83-86 mph changeups that tamed a Tigers team that saw its season batting average drop to a major league worst .195.
