Dodgers Finish August With NL Record 57 Home Runs

Aug 31, 2020 8:13 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers set the National League record for home runs in a month with 57 in August.

Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager and Will Smith each hit homers as the Dodgers beat the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

The Atlanta Braves held the previous record with 56 in June 2019.

Dave Roberts didn't seem interested in an asterisk for the record because the NL is using the designated hitter for the first time in the pandemic-shortened season.

"It's still a record," Roberts said. "It's just a byproduct of swinging at good pitches. I don't know how well the ball is carrying compared to the last couple of years, but it's amazing to see the talent that we have in our lineup."

Lucas Giolito Tosses Season's First Ho-Hitter

Aug 26, 2020 8:52 AM

Lucas Giolito threw the first no-hitter of the 2020 season on Tuesday, shutting out the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 on 101 pitches.

"I knew it was working after the first inning," Giolito said. "It just kept building and building. After the sixth inning was when I really started to notice what was going on. After the seventh, I was like, 'I got six outs. We're going to make this happen.'"

The final out came on a line drive from Erik Gonzalez -- it had an 85% chance of being a hit -- that right-fielder Adam Engel snagged before the celebration began.

"He made history in a very old game," Engel said. "I still can't get over how excited I am for Lucas. I'm still on cloud nine from the game."

Giolito, 26, walked one and struck out 13 using a combination of his fastball and his changeup. He produced 30 swing-and-misses, second most in a no-hitter since 1988.
