Mallex Smith Records 'Stolen Base Cycle'

May 28, 2019 8:22 AM

Mallex Smith stole home in the eighth inning to complete a "stolen base cycle" in Monday night's Seattle Mariners-Texas Rangers game.

Mallex tied a Mariners record with his four steals. He is the first Seattle player to steal home since Dustin Ackley in 2012.

"It was great to see Mallex get going," Scott Servais said. "I've never seen anybody steal three bases in one inning."

Twins On Pace For MLB-Record 324 Home Runs

May 25, 2019 11:49 AM

The Minnesota Twins homered eight times on Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels, continuing a remarkable pace.

Minnesota also went deep eight times in a game earlier this season against the Baltimore Orioles.

"It's all just kind of clicked and hopefully there's no stopping," C.J. Cron said. "When you are hitting like this it is contagious. If you look at this lineup you are going to see a lot of power. We have the ability to do that and it is nice to show it."

The Twins lead baseball with 98 home runs in 2019, putting them on pace for 324 homers. That would shatter the 2018 New York Yankees' record of 267 home runs.

Gleyber Torres Hits 10th Home Run Of Season Against Orioles

May 23, 2019 8:00 AM

Gleyber Torres homered twice against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night, giving him 10 in 11 games against the team this season.

The Orioles have given up 105 home runs in 49 games.

"There's definitely a pitching plan [against Torres]; it's definitely not to throw the ball in the middle of the plate -- and we just continue to do it," Brandon Hyde said. "When you don't do it, we get him out.

"Gleyber's got two homers besides facing the Orioles. Hitting like .220 or something. So people, major league pitchers, are pitching to him."

Torres actually is hitting .250 against all other teams. Against the Orioles, he is batting .465, with a whopping 1.763 OPS.

Orioles Fastest Ever To Allow 100 Home Runs

May 22, 2019 7:48 AM

The Baltimore Orioles made history on Tuesday night.

The club's pitching staff allowed their 100th home run in their 48th game, reaching the mark faster than any club in Major League history.

The 2000 Kansas City Royals allowed their 100th homer in game No. 57.

The Orioles are on pace to allow 338 home runs this season. The current record is held by the 2016 Cincinnati Reds (258).

"We're facing good teams, but you gotta pitch," Brandon Hyde said. "You gotta pitch here. You gotta stay off the barrel. You gotta be able to locate. And if you don't, in a hitter's ballpark against guys that mash, you're going to give up a hundred homers, 40-something games into it."

Hyun-Jin Ryu Extends Scoreless Streak To 31 Innings

May 21, 2019 8:10 AM

Hyun-Jin Ryu shutout the Cincinnati Reds over seven innings on Sunday, extending his Major League-leading scoreless innings streak to 31 innings.

"He's just locked in right now with all of his pitches," Dave Roberts said of his starting pitcher. "It's fun to watch. He's healthy. The conditions, the situations don't matter."

Ryu had baserunners in each of his first five innings, but none of them got past second base and he retired his last eight batters.

His ERA for the season is now 1.52.

"I wasn't crisp, especially early in the game," Ryu said through a translator. "There was a lot of traffic out there. I was able to execute the right pitches at the right time."

Austin Riley Homers In Second Major League At-Bat

May 16, 2019 8:55 AM

The Atlanta Braves called up Austin Riley on Wednesday and he didn't disappoint.

The club's top prospect homered in his second Major League at-bat to lead off the fourth inning.

At the time of his promotion, Riley was leading the International League with 15 homers and 39 RBI.

"I'm speechless," Riley said. "That second at-bat, I figured he was going to challenge me a little bit. I was able to put a good swing on it."

Riley hit another drive to the edge of the warning track his next time up to the plate.

Vlad Jr. Follows Up First Home Run With Another

May 15, 2019 7:53 AM

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. homered twice on Tuesday night to become the third-youngest player to hit his first two Major League homers in the same game.

Guerrero received advice from his Hall of Fame father amid his early struggles.

"He just said like he always told me, 'Don't look for home runs. They're going to come,'" he said of his father through a translator. "I'm going to give both balls and the bat to my dad. I'm going to keep using everything that I used today, except the bat that I really want to give to my dad."

Guerrero, 20, homered in the first inning against San Francisco Giants opener Nick Vincent (0-2), his first in 14 Major League games.
