Jacob deGrom Lowers ERA To 1.70 In Final Start

Sep 27, 2018 8:01 AM

Jacob deGrom struck out 10 over eight scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night, lowering his ERA to 1.70 on the season.

deGrom also recorded the 1,000th strikeout of his career when he punched out his final batter, Ozzie Albies.

"I'm really excited with how the night went," deGrom said. "I had the goal to get to that tonight. It was a lot cooler to get my 1,000th strikeout on my last pitch of the year than my first batter next year."

The New York Mets right-hander is a candidate for the National League Cy Young award.

He has just 10 wins, but finished with a record 24 quality starts.

Max Scherzer Joins Elite Company With 300th Strikeout

Sep 26, 2018 7:58 AM

Max Scherzer recorded his 300th strikeout of the season Tuesday night as the Washington Nationals faced the Miami Marlins.

"I definitely wanted to do it here at home," said Scherzer, who is scheduled to make his final start Sunday at the Colorado Rockies. "The fans, unbelievable support. When they're standing on their feet, going crazy, it just gives you an extra adrenaline boost, and you just want to go out there and accomplish that. It was an amazing feeling to have the fans behind you and the respect that they gave."

Scherzer's 10 strikeouts marked the 18th time he has tallied double-digits this season, the most in the Major Leagues.

He becomes the 17th pitcher since 1900 to fan 300 batters in a season and the fifth since 2000, joining Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale.

Yankees Set Record For Most Players With 10 HRs

Sep 25, 2018 8:13 AM

With Luke Voit's home run in the second inning on Thursday night, the New York Yankees now have 12 players with 10 or more homers this season.

It marks the first time in Major League history a team has had a dozen players with double-digit home runs.

"It's still pretty cool to be a part of that," Voit said. "It's something to kind of take a positive from that game. No one else can say that they did that."

The previous record was 11 shared by the 2015 and 2017 Astros, the 2016 Twins and the 2004 Tigers.

In addition to Voit, Giancarlo Stanton (35), Aaron Judge (26), Didi Gregorius (26), Miguel Andujar (25), Aaron Hicks (24), Gleyber Torres (23), Gary Sanchez (16), Brett Gardner (12), Greg Bird (11) and Neil Walker (10) also have double-digit home runs.

Christian Yelich Makes History With Second Cycle Of Season

Sep 19, 2018 8:10 AM

Christian Yelich made history on Monday night when he hit for the cycle against the Cincinnati Reds for the second time this season.

The Milwaukee Brewers outfielder is the first player in Major League history to hit for the cycle against the same team twice in one season.

He's just the fifth player ever to have two cycles in a season. His first cycle came on August 30.

"There's been so many great players to play this game," Yelich said. "It just shows how freaky, I guess, that is. A lot of luck goes into that. It's hard enough to get four hits in a Major League Baseball game, yet alone have them all be the right ones and the right sequence."

Yelich is batting .500 (24 for 48) with seven homers, 17 RBIs and 12 runs against the Reds this season.

J.D. Martinez Chasing First Global Triple Crown Since 1956

Sep 14, 2018 8:14 AM

J.D. Martinez has a chance to make Major League history over the final month of the season.

Martinez could finish the season as baseball's overall leader in batting average, home runs and RBI. The last player to lead Major League Baseball in all three categories was Mickey Mantle in 1956.

An American League or National League triple crown is rare as well. It has been achieved just 16 times since the RBI became an official statistic in 1920.

Through Thursday's action, Martinez ranked second in batting average (.330), tied for first in home runs (41) and first in RBI (122).
