Aaron Judge Breaks Mark McGwire's Rookie Home Run Mark

Sep 26, 2017 7:34 AM

Aaron Judge clubbed two home runs against the Kansas City Royals on Monday afternoon to give him 50 for the season.

He tied and then surpassed Mark McGwire's rookie home run record as the New York Yankees won 11-3.

Judge's teammates had to convince him to walk up the dugout steps to acknowledge the fans saluting him at Yankee Stadium.

"They kind of told me: 'You got to go out there. You got to go out there,'" he would say later. "First curtain call. I hope it was a good one."

McGwire hit 49 homers for the Oakland Athletics in 1987.

Chris Sale Becomes First AL Pitcher In 18 Years To Reach 300 Ks

Sep 22, 2017 7:39 AM

Chris Sale struck out 13 batters on Wednesday night to become the first American League pitcher in 18 years to reach the 300-strikeout mark.

Sale reached the milestone on his 111th and final pitch, a called third strike to end the eighth inning against the Baltimore Orioles.

The last AL pitcher to fan 300 batters in a season was Pedro Martinez in 1999, when he set a club record with 313.

"A dominant performance after a year that has been a dominant one," John Farrell said.

Giancarlo Stanton Ends Drought With 55th Home Run

Sep 19, 2017 7:34 AM

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 55th home run on Monday as he hit third in the batting order for the first time this season.

Stanton had gone six games and 29 at-bats without a home run, which qualified as a drought for the slugger. It was the most games Stanton had gone without hitting a home run since a 14-game span from May 9 to 24.

His 55 home runs are the most since Ryan Howard hit 58 in 2006.

The Miami Marlins have 12 games remaining this season.

Astros Clinch AL West Title

Sep 18, 2017 7:41 AM

Justin Verlander struck out 10 against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday to lead the Houston Astros to a 7-1 win.

The victory clinched the American League West title for Houston.

"The story is almost too good to be true," A.J. Hinch said. "We trade for him for this exact reason to come up in big moments. He was locked in from the very beginning. Nobody better to have on the mound and nobody better to celebrate with."

The Astros acquired Verlander from the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 31, just minutes before the deadline for players to be eligible for postseason play.

"I don't think you could ask for a better introduction for me to the city of Houston than this," Verlander said. "First home start would have been great. First home start and a win would have been great. First home start and to win in a division-clinching game -- you can't make that up. And I'm looking forward to hopefully many more wins."

Angels Use AL-Record 12 Pitchers In Victory

Sep 5, 2017 7:46 AM

The Los Angeles Angels used an American League-record 12 pitchers in their 11-9 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday.

Mike Scioscia had no idea he set a new mark.

"Both teams or us?" the manager asked. "If I had needed a couple more innings, we would have used probably 13 or 14. Hopefully not too often."

Three Angels pitchers didn't record an out. The 12 pitchers overall topped the previous AL mark of 11 done four times, most recently by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013.

The Colorado Rockies set a major league record by using 13 pitchers in 2015 during a 16-inning game.
