Young Cubs Set Mark For 20-Home Run Seasons

Aug 31, 2017 9:21 AM

The Chicago Cubs have become the first team in Major League history to have five players record at least 20 home runs in their age-25 season or younger.

Ian Happ, 23, homered against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday to join Javier Baez (age 24), Kyle Schwarber (24), Willson Contreras (25) and Kris Bryant (25) in the club.

"That's pretty impressive. That's never been done, right? That's a long time," Joe Maddon said.

Wade Davis Sets Cubs Mark With 27th Straight Save

Aug 30, 2017 8:06 AM

Wade Davis set a franchise record for the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night when he converted his 27th consecutive save.

"To have the record here is pretty impressive," Joe Maddon said. "He's a pitcher. He has a starting pitcher's mentality as a closer. He has weapons for righties or lefties. It doesn't matter the hitter. Good for him because that [record] will probably last for a while."

Davis didn't stick around to discuss the feat with the media.

He is now 27-for-27 in save attempts this season. He the only pitcher with more than three saves or more that hasn't blown one in 2017.

Chris Sale Fastest In Major League History With 1,500 Ks

Aug 30, 2017 7:59 AM

Chris Sale struck out Kevin Pillar of the Toronto Blue Jays in the second inning Tuesday night to reach 1,500 career strikeouts faster than any pitcher in Major League history.

"It's hard for me to fathom that a guy can record that many strikeouts in less than 1,300 innings," John Farrell said. "Really remarkable."

Sale, who struck out 11 and allowed three hits in seven innings, considered his achievement "pretty crazy."

"This game has been around a long time," he said. "To do that, it's cool. I appreciate it. I try not to get too caught up in it but I definitely take a step back and look at that and appreciate it."

The milestone came in Sale's 1,290th inning pitched.

Royals Scoreless Streak Reaches 43 Innings

Aug 29, 2017 7:51 AM

The Kansas City Royals haven't scored a run in 43 innings after getting shut out for a fourth straight game on Monday night.

They haven't scored since the second inning of a 3-2 loss to Colorado last Thursday. The 1968 Chicago Cubs and the 1906 Philadelphia Athletics hold the Major League record at 48 scoreless innings.

"I hate to say it, but it's all about learning how to lose," Ned Yost said. "This can really wear you down and prolong streaks like this for a long time because it's very hard when you're losing these types of games because disappointment sets in, frustration sets in.

"At the end of the day if we haven't scored in four days, I can still look at this group knowing that this group has been all in for four days. They've played to the last out for four games. There is nothing more than I can ask from them."

Albert Pujols Becomes Foreign-Born Home Run Leader

Aug 24, 2017 7:53 AM

Albert Pujols hit a three-run home run on Tuesday night to become Major League Baseball's all-time home run leader among foreign-born players.

Pujols has clubbed 610 homers in his career, passing fellow Dominican Sammy Sosa for the distinction and taking sole possession of eighth place on the all-time list.

"It's pretty special," Pujols said. "Obviously other great players from the Dominican Republic, Latin America, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, they've gone through the big leagues, and to be able to accomplish something like this is very humbling. I want to thank God for giving me the ability and the talent and the opportunity to be able to do it and win. For me, I go out there and do whatever it takes to help this ballclub win every day. I don't think about home runs or any numbers."

Giancarlo Stanton Has Goal Of 61 Home Runs

Aug 18, 2017 10:20 PM

Giancarlo Stanton says he's aiming for 61 home runs and that he finds baseball's statistical history both alluring and tainted.

Stanton had a six-game home run streak end on Wednesday. He has 44 home runs on the season and remains on pace for 61.

"When you grow up watching all the old films of Babe Ruth and [Mickey] Mantle and those guys, 61 has always been that printed number," he said.

Ruth hit a record 60 homers in 1927, and Stanton said he gives that achievement an asterisk because the sport wasn't integrated then. Mantle's teammate Roger Maris broke the record with 61 in 1961.

Barry Bonds set the current record of 73 in 2001 during the steroids era, and Stanton said he also considers that total tainted.

"I do, but at the same time. it doesn't matter," he said. "The record is the record."

Aaron Judge Sets Consecutive Strikeout Mark

Aug 18, 2017 10:20 PM

Aaron Judge hit a massive home run against the New York Mets on Wednesday night, but it was another one of his at-bats that set a Major League record.

Judge struck out in the ninth inning, giving him a strikeout in 33 straight games, breaking the single-season mark set by Adam Dunn in 2012.

"Was I aware [of the record]?" the New York Yankees slugger said afterward. "I was told before the game that I tied the record. I think you just informed me that I broke the record, so thank you. There's nothing I can really say."

Judge is two games shy of the single-season record for consecutive games with a strikeout for any player -- 35, set by Montreal Expos pitcher Bill Stoneman in 1971.

Aug 16, 2017 7:50 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-1 on Tuesday night, moving them 50 games over .500 on the season.

They are the first club since the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals to achieve the feat.

Los Angeles is on pace to win 117 games, one more than the Major League record set by the 2001 Seattle Mariners and 1906 Chicago Cubs.

"It's a credit to the guys in the clubhouse," Dave Roberts said. "It's really special. I know personally, having worn this uniform as a player and knowing a lot of guys that played before, it's pretty special."

Giancarlo Stanton Sets Marlins Record With 43rd Home Run

Aug 16, 2017 7:51 AM

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 43rd home run of the season on Monday night as the Miami Marlins took on the San Francisco Giants.

Stanton set a new club record, breaking Gary Sheffield's mark of 42 reached in 1996. He accomplished the feat in Miami's 117th game of the season.

"When you're one homer or one hit away from a record, you don't want to let it linger because then every at-bat is, 'Is he going to do it? Is he going to do it?'" the slugger said. "So luckily I got it out of the way right away, put us on top, and able to finish."

Stanton has homered 22 times in his past 34 games.
