Cubs-Pirates Play To MLB's First Tie Since 2005

Sep 30, 2016 4:21 PM

The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates played to the first tie in Major League Baseball since June 2005 on Thursday.

Rain forced the teams to stop playing in the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1 and led to a delay of nearly 90 minutes. Because the game has no effect on postseason positioning and the teams aren't scheduled to play again this season, MLB decided the game would not be made up and officially declared it a tie.

All stats from the game will count.

Jeurys Familia Becomes First Dominican To Save 50 Games

Sep 29, 2016 7:22 AM

Jeurys Familia hit a milestone on Wednesday night, becoming the first Dominican-born pitcher to notch 50 saves.

The save also extended Familia's franchise record and he becomes the 13th Major League to reach the 50-save mark.

"I go back to last year when we lost Mejia. I just turned to a kid who had good stuff and said, 'Do you think you can close?'" Terry Collins said. "And you look up now, he's got, what? Ninety-three saves in two years? I can't tell you what a great job he's done and how much he's meant to us."

Familia has a 2.23 ERA since the start of the 2015 season, third among all pitchers with at least 150 innings.

Major Leaguers On Pace To Hit Second-Most Home Runs Ever In 2016

Sep 27, 2016 8:08 AM

Major League hitters clubbed 5,392 home runs heading into Sunday's action, a pace that would surpass the second-most productive season in history when 5,528 long balls were hit in 1999.

Hitters will likely finish the season with the highest home run rate in history. They are hitting a home run in 3.06 percent of their plate appearances. Never before has the three-percent mark been cleared.

The all-time mark for home runs in a season came in 2000 (5,693).

Just two years ago, the home run rate was just 2.28 percent.

Gary Sanchez Fastest To 19 HRs In Major League History

Sep 22, 2016 4:43 PM

Gary Sanchez has become the first player in Major League history to hit 19 home runs in his first 45 games.

Sanchez hit two home runs in the New York Yankees' 11-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.

He bested Wally Berger of the 1930 Boston Braves, who went deep 19 times in his first 51 games.

"It's hard to believe," Joe Girardi said of Sanchez. "I haven't seen anything like it."

Reds Surrender Major League Record 242nd Home Run

Sep 20, 2016 4:24 PM

The Cincinnati Reds have been bad this season and now their futility will forever be remembered.

Jason Heyward hit a home run in the eighth inning on Monday night off Blake Wood, the 242nd long ball the Reds have given up this season.

The total is more than any Major League club has allowed in a single season.

Only nine teams in history have allowed more than 230 home runs in a season. The Reds still have 12 games remaining to extend the record.

Cubs Aren't Concerned With Dip In Jake Arrieta's Velocity

Sep 21, 2016 10:50 AM

Jake Arrieta has endured an up-and-down season and a loss to the Brewers continued the trend.

Arrieta gave up four hits over six innings, but walked four and surrendered a home run to Ryan Braun.

"I'm not concerned with it," he said. "Just need to find that comfort with the sinker in the strike zone, first pitch. After that, it opens up a lot of doors. We're working on it."

While Arrieta seems focused on his off-speed stuff, Joe Maddon often references his velocity.

"There were a lot of 93s (mph)," Maddon said. "I think he hit 95 once or twice. But he's not complaining of being tired or anything bothering him physically."

Orioles Flirting With All-Time Home Run Mark For Team

Sep 13, 2016 3:16 PM

The Baltimore Orioles have 228 home runs with roughly three weeks left in the regular season.

The total is already the 36th-history in Major League Baseball history for a team.

With an average of 1.59 home runs per game, the Orioles would finish 2016 with 258 home runs.

That projected total would rank the Orioles third on the all-time list behind only the 1997 Seattle Mariners (264) and 2005 Texas Rangers (260).

Brian Dozier Becomes Fourth Second Baseman To Hit 40 HRs

Sep 13, 2016 6:27 AM

Brian Dozier made history on Monday night, becoming just the fourth second baseman in Major League history to hit 40 home runs in a season.

Dozier joins Davey Johnson, Ryne Sandberg and Rogers Hornsby on the short list.

"I'm sure when the season is over, it will mean a lot more, but I just wish this was happening in (first-place) Cleveland's position or Detroit's position, where we were making a run," Dozier said. "We're still looking at losing 100 games. ... That takes something away from this."

Dozier is the second Minnesota player to reach 40 home runs in a season. Harmon Killebrew was the other. He did it most recently in 1970.

Dansby Swanson's First Home Run Is Inside The Park

Sep 7, 2016 7:24 AM

Dansby Swanson hit the first home run of his Major League career on Tuesday night with an inside-the-park job against the Washington Nationals.

The first overall pick in 2015, Swanson lined a pitch from Gio Gonzalez over Trea Turner and high off the center-field fence, 399 feet away. The ball caromed toward the infield, and Swanson slid home headfirst, easily beating the throw by Bryce Harper.

"It was one of those things where I thought it was going to be my first triple," Swanson said. "Then as I kept going, judging by the reaction in the dugout and the crowd, I thought, 'Maybe I'll get an inside-the-parker.' I just kept going."
