Rays Won't Allow Chris Archer To Lose 20 Games

Aug 30, 2016 7:45 AM

The Tampa Bay Rays won't allow Chris Archer to lose 20 games this season, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Archer leads the Major Leagues with 17 losses through Sunday's action.

The right-hander was expected to be among the game's best pitchers this season, but has been a little unlucky. He has a 4.10 ERA, but leads baseball in strikeouts (202) and K/9 (10.8) Archer's FIP is 3.72.

The Rays don't want him to be forever known as having lost 20 games.

Mike Maroth of the Detroit Tigers (2003) was the last pitcher to lose 20 games.

David Ortiz Becomes Oldest Player To Have 30-Home Run Season

Aug 25, 2016 7:43 AM

David Ortiz became the oldest player in Major League history to hit 30 home runs in a season in the Boston Red Sox's extra-inning loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.

Ortiz, 40, hit the first pitch he saw from Matt Andriese in the first inning for a two-run homer.

He is the only player with 30 homers and 100 RBIs in each of the past four seasons, and he is the first Red Sox player to drive in 100 runs 10 times.

"We need that, we need offense," Ortiz said. "We've had a good offense this year, and that's what's keeping us alive, so hopefully it continues."

Gary Sanchez Sets Yankees Mark With Eighth Home Run

Aug 23, 2016 6:25 AM

Gary Sanchez has eight home runs in his first 19 games, the first player in New York Yankees history to hit so many homers so quickly.

Sanchez went deep twice against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night as the Yankees lost 7-5.

"It's very tough when you can put on the board a couple of runs and get to hit two home runs and all that, but the bottom line is you don't win the game," Sanchez said through a translator.

With six homers in his first 18 games before Monday, Sanchez already had tied Kevin Maas and Shelley Duncan as the only ever to accomplish the feat.

The Yankees signed Sanchez out of the Dominican Republic for a $3 million signing bonus when he was 16.

Jose Altuve Is Fastest To 1,000 Hits In Astros History

Aug 17, 2016 7:51 AM

Jose Altuve hit a single in the ninth inning on Tuesday night to give him 1,000 hits in his Major League career.

"I'm so proud of that guy," A.J. Hinch said. "He continues to be exceptional, and to have that moment where, in front of our home crowd, he can get his 1,000th hit in a very short time in his career is a real highlight in my career."

Altuve reached the milestone in 786 games, making him the fastest to do so in Houston Astros history and second-fastest among active players behind Ichiro Suzuki, who did it in his 696th game.

"I feel right now like I don't want to stop," Altuve said. "I want to keep getting better and help my team, and I'm not going to be [satisfied] until I take my team to the World Series."

At 26 years and 102 days old, Altuve is the ninth-youngest in Major League history to reach 1,000 hits, older than only Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, Alex Rodriguez, Robin Yount, Hank Aaron, Tris Speaker, George Brett and Derek Jeter.

Bartolo Colon Draws First Walk In 282nd Plate Appearance

Aug 16, 2016 7:28 AM

Bartolo Colon drew the first walk of his career Monday night against Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray. It came in Colon's 282nd plate appearance over 19 Major League seasons.

No other player in big league history had appeared at the plate that many times without a walk, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

"That surprised me as well. I don't know why that pitcher didn't strike me out. He could have. I really couldn't do much more at that point," Colon said, citing a sore wrist.

Earlier this season, Colon hit the first home run of his career.

Aroldis Chapman Rewarded With Steak Dinner For Three-Pitch Outing

Aug 12, 2016 6:23 AM

Joe Maddon owes Aroldis Chapman a steak dinner after the pitcher needed just three pitches to get three outs in the ninth inning on Thursday night.

"When you're in the minor leagues, you actually give a pitcher a steak dinner for a four-pitch inning," Maddon explained. "He got it in three, so I have to make it a really good steak dinner."

The Chicago Cubs went on to win 4-3 over the St. Louis Cardinals in 11 innings. Chapman was the fifth Major League pitcher to throw a three-pitch inning this season.
