Jackie Bradley's 29-Game Hit Streak Ends

May 27, 2016 7:04 AM

Jackie Bradley's 29-game hit streak ended in the Boston Red Sox's 8-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night.

Bradley went 0-for-4 after moving up to the leadoff spot for the first time this season. It marked the first time anyone besides Mookie Betts led off a game for the Red Sox.

"It happens," Bradley said. "I feel like I put some pretty good swings on the ball and they got caught."

Francisco Rodriguez Joins Rare Club With 400th Save

May 25, 2016 7:48 AM

Francisco Rodriguez joined an elite group Tuesday night when he recorded the 400th save of his Major League career, becoming only the sixth pitcher to accomplish such a feat.

Rodriguez broke into the big leagues with the Los Angeles Angels in 2002.

"When I came here to the States to the big leagues, I was just a kid with a lot of dreams, but [it] never, not even crossed my mind," Rodriguez said of reaching the milestone. "One thing I want to make clear: I don't play for numbers. I play this game because I love it. I've got it in my veins, and that's the only thing that, honestly, I know how to do well. It had nothing to do with records or anything like that."

Rodriguez has 14 saves for the Detroit Tigers this season.

He joined Mariano Rivera (652), Trevor Hoffman (601), Lee Smith (478), Billy Wagner (422) and John Franco (424) as the only pitchers with 400 saves.

Ground-Rule Double Costs David Ortiz Chance At Cycle

May 23, 2016 6:58 AM

David Ortiz hit a ground-rule double on Sunday afternoon that cost him a chance at the first cycle of his storied Major League career.

"I was going to let it fly if the ball stayed in," Ortiz said.

The 40-year-old also launched his 514th home run in the game, moving into a tie with Cal Ripken Jr. for 13th on the all-time doubles list (603) and surpassed Gary Sheffield for 27th in RBIs (1,678).

"When I hit it, it wasn’t on my mind, but when I went around first base and I saw everybody going crazy, I was like, 'Oh, I better get going.' But things happen for a reason," he said. "I don't need to hit a triple. Take a minute. You don't want to try to overdo things and then all of a sudden something happens."

Chris Sale First Pitcher Since 2008 To Start 9-0

May 20, 2016 7:03 AM

Chris Sale pitched a complete game four-hitter on Thursday night to become the first Major League pitcher since 2008 to win his first nine starts.

The Chicago White Sox edged the Houston Astros to snap their season-high four game losing streak.

"I just see him continuing to get better as the season goes along, as he goes through his career," Robin Ventura said. "He's confident. He's doing a lot of different things that he hasn't done in the past as far as just adding a little bit [to his pitches], taking a little off in the heat of the moment."

Sale walked none and struck out a season-high nine en route to his second straight complete game. No other pitcher has more than seven victories in the big leagues this season.

"Just keep doing more of the same," Sale said of the next step. "You got to stay on it, what you've done, where you've been, just try to better yourself. Any athlete that respects the game will tell you that."

Yordano Ventura Has Higher BB Percentage Than K Percentage

May 17, 2016 6:41 AM

Yordano Ventura has yet to realize a lot of the promise surrounding his career and there is a new concern about his ability to harness that potential for the Kansas City Royals.

Ventura, who will turn 25 next month, has a 4.62 ERA, 1.568 WHIP and a Major League-leading 28 walks issued in 37 innings this season.

Among qualified starters, Ventura is the only one to have a higher walk percentage than strikeout percentage. His -1.2% K-BB% is more than two points lower than the second-worst -- Martin Perez at 1.0%. No pitcher had a negative K-BB% in 2015.

Red Sox On Pace To Have Historic Offense

May 15, 2016 1:23 AM

The Boston Red Sox have scored 51 runs in their last four games, pushing their runs per game average to 5.91 entering the weekend.

They are on pace to score more than 957 runs, which would rank as the third-highest total in franchise history behind only the 2003 team (961) and the 1950 club led by Ted Williams (1,027).

What is unique about this season's outburst is the current offensive environment in baseball. Using wRC+, which which considers a team's offensive statistics, ballpark factors and the league run-scoring environment, and then scales it so 100 is a league-average offense, the 2016 Red Sox have the best offensive in baseball history.

Noah Syndergaard Homers Twice Against Kenta Maeda

May 12, 2016 7:02 AM

Noah Syndergaard became just the second pitcher in New York Mets history to hit two home runs in a game on Wednesday, one day shy of the one-year anniversary of his Major League debut.

Syndergaard hit a solo homer in his first plate appearance then hit a three-run shot in his next trip to the plate against Los Angeles Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda.

He said his immediate thought after his second homer was "that this is a dream, it's not real."

"I don't think I ever hit two home runs when I played little league," Syndergaard said. "To be able to hit two home runs in a big league ballgame, especially with a pitcher like Maeda up there, it's an awesome experience."

May 10, 2016 8:25 AM

Felix Hernandez allowed two runs over seven innings to guide the Seattle Mariners over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

It marked the 146th win of Hernandez's career, moving him past Jamie Moyer for most in franchise history.

"It means a lot," Hernandez said. "It's an honor to be on top of that list. I'm happy for that. It was a great team effort, great win for us."

He improved to 8-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 11 starts against Tampa Bay at Safeco Field.
