Cuddyer Wins NL Batting Title

Oct 31, 2014 1:53 PM

The Colorado Rockies finished up a losing season on Sunday, but Michael Cuddyer ended it with the National League batting title.

Cuddyer finished with a .331 batting average to win the batting title by 10 points over Atlanta's Chris Johnson, who was held out Sunday to rest his right shoulder.

"It was nothing that I ever expected and I really can't wrap my head around it yet," Cuddyer said. "It just goes to show that no matter what time you're at in your career, something like this can happen if you continue to work hard."

Cabrera hit .348 for the Detroit Tigers. He sat out Sunday's regular-season finale.

Crisp Surprised With First 20-20 Season

Sep 16, 2014 3:56 PM

Coco Crisp stole a base on Sunday, his 20th swipe of the season.

Crisp also has 22 home runs, giving him the first 20-20 season of his career as he approaches age 34.

He called the feat "quite shocking."

"I'm having a lot of fun," Crisp said. "The homers – that's when I get my hands shaken. I enjoy it more when others hit the home runs, although I don't want (his own homers) to stop."

A-Rod Hits Record 24th Grand Slam

Sep 18, 2014 5:45 PM

Alex Rodriguez hit a grand slam against the San Francisco Giants on Friday night, breaking a 75-year-old Major League Baseball record.

Rodriguez now stands alone in first place with 24 grand slams, surpassing New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig. It was the 654th home run of Rodriguez's career.

"You know, that means I'm getting old," the 38-year-old said. "It's hard to think about things like that right now. We're really on a sprint to the end here, and every win is huge for us."

Rodriguez tied Gehrig with 23 career grand slams on June 12, 2012. Gehrig's last grand slam came on Aug. 20, 1938, when he was in his last full season with the Yankees.

Hamilton Steals Four Bases In First Start

Sep 15, 2014 1:08 PM

Billy Hamilton started his first Major League game on Wednesday, hitting ninth and playing center field for the Cincinnati Reds.

Hamilton went on to reach base five times with three hits, four stolen bases and two runs scored.

"It was a pretty big game. I'm excited about it," said Hamilton, who was called up on Sept. 3. "Coming in, I was nervous. I got on the field and guys were on my side. They said, 'You've got to go between the white lines, no matter what level you're on.' That really gave me a bunch of confidence and settled me down a bit."

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Hamilton is the first Major League player since the live ball era to record four steals in his first start.

"My job is to steal bases, no matter how many I get," Hamilton said. "That's an accomplishment to get four in one game. Who knows what comes next?"

Ubaldo Jimenez No Longer Focused On Velocity

Sep 2, 2014 1:51 AM

Ubaldo Jimenez says he is no longer consumed with pitch velocity like he was in recent seasons.

"I'm not paying attention to that now," Jimenez said. "That's something that I was working on [in the past]. Everybody was telling me, Velocity, velocity, velocity.' So I was trying to get back to who I was velocity-wise."

Jimenez has come to accept that he is not the same hard-throwing pitcher he was in his early days with the Colorado Rockies. He now sticks with his plan of mixing up his wide array of offerings with the Cleveland Indians.

The right-hander is 12-9 with a 3.49 ERA over 29 starts, but he has found another gear in the second half. Over his past 20 starts, he has a 2.52 ERA.

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Matt Kemp from the disabled list for the third time in 2013.

He went 0-1 with a strikeout as a pinch hitter on Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kemp is hitting .262/.317/.380 with five home runs and 27 RBIs.

Balentien Sets Japanese HR Mark

May 20, 2014 1:59 AM

Wladimir Balentien hit his 56th and 57th home runs on Sunday, breaking the Japanese single-season record set by legendary slugger Sadaharu Oh 49 years ago.

Oh set the record of 55 in 1964.

"I want to thank the fans for all their support,'' Balentien said. "It was a great feeling. I don't think I will ever feel anything like that again in my life.''

The 29-year-old missed the first 12 games of this season because of a leg injury sustained while playing for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic.

Sabathia On Pace For Second-Highest Yankee ERA

Nov 27, 2014 6:11 PM

CC Sabathia has struggled this season and is headed for a historically bad ERA.

The left-hander's 4.90 ERA would be the second-worst for a New York Yankee pitcher that threw at least 200 innings in a season.

Randy Johnson had a 5.00 ERA for the Yankees in 2006.

Sabathia hasn't posted an ERA over 4.00 since the 2005 season with the Cleveland Indians.
