Cuddyer Extends Hitting Streak To 25 Games

Sep 6, 2014 7:10 PM

Michael Cuddyer homered for the Rockies on Friday night, extending his hitting streak to 25 games.

Cuddyer's streak is the longest in the majors this season and extended his franchise record. He has reached base safely in 44 straight games, also a club record.

"Cuddy's so locked in right now, I don't know if you can swing the bat any better than he is right now," Walt Weiss said. "He's doing damage, too, when he gets his hits. He's been huge."

Scherzer First 12-0 Starter Since 1986

Sep 17, 2014 11:14 PM

Max Scherzer helped the Tigers defeat the Rays on Friday night, improving to 12-0 this season.

Scherzer is the first starting pitcher to start a season 12-0 since Roger Clemens did so in 1986.

"It's really nice to be 12-0," said Scherzer, who allowed three runs, four hits, walked one and struck out nine in seven innings to become the first pitcher in Tigers history to win his first 12 decisions.

"I'm pitching well, but the reason I'm 12-0 is because of my offense," he added. "You got to see firsthand today the best player in the game hitting two home runs on three pitches and going 4 for 4. And Prince hits a bomb. It's the offense that set me up."

Yanks Have Just Two Right-Handed HRs Since June 4

Sep 21, 2014 7:20 AM

Before Jayson Nix homered against the Rangers on Tuesday night, the Yankees hadn't had a right-handed hitter smack a home run since June 4.

In fact, New York has gotten just three right-handed homers from their lineup since May 22.

The Yankees have played 29 games since then, and in that time their righties are hitting .185 with a .241 on-base percentage and a .224 slugging percentage.

Justin Upton Hitting .211 In 50 Games Since Hot Start

Sep 17, 2014 3:19 PM

The Braves raced out to a 12-1 record this season, but are just 33-32 since as Justin Upton has cooled down.

Upton hit 12 home runs in his first 23 games, but he's hit .211 with three home runs in 50 games since.

He hasn't gotten much help from his teammates in the outfield. B.J. Upton continues to struggle (.177 average and 83 Ks) and Justin Heyward is hitting .216 after missing time following an appendectomy.

It was expected that Justin Upton would cool down, but Atlanta also hoped B.J. Upton and Heyward would pick things up.

Puig's Comparables Include DiMaggio, Francoeur

Oct 5, 2014 9:49 PM

Yasiel Puig has registered 52 total bases through his first 19 Major League games.

Through 73 at-bats, Puig is hitting .425/.462/.712 with six home runs and 12 RBI. He has two stolen bases and 17 strikeouts (against just three walks).

Using a list of players with the most total bases through their first 19 games, he has comparables ranging from Chris Dickerson and Josh Rutledge to Willie McCovey and Joe DiMaggio.

David Schoenfield writes that DiMaggio and Jeff Francoeur are Puig's most likely comparables.

"I'd suggest Puig's future could range from DiMaggio to Francouer -- yes, that's how wide of an arc we have to put over him right now. His raw ability is so immense, with that great opposite-field power -- four of his six home runs have gone to right-center or right -- and his plus defense that he could grow into an MVP candidate someday," writes Schoenfield.

Blue Jays Match Team Mark With 11th Straight

Oct 5, 2014 7:44 PM

The Blue Jays topped the Orioles on Sunday for their 11th straight victory.

The run matches the longest winning streak in team history.

The Blue Jays have gone 28-15 since May 2, when they were a season-worst 10-21.

They've won 15 of their past 18, outscoring their opponents 102-52 in that span.

"I've been waiting for this since the season started," Edwin Encarnacion said. "I believe in this team so I knew things had to change, things had to become good for us. That's the way right now and we enjoy it, enjoy the moment. I'm not surprised by this. I know this team is good and I know we can do it."

Victor Martinez Showing Signs Of Turnaround

Sep 25, 2014 4:57 PM

Victor Martinez has hit the ball hard this season, but his numbers aren't reflecting that.

The average Major League hitter has a batting average well above their rate of "hard-hit" balls, but Martinez's .231 batting average has actually been well below his hard-hit rate.

In addition, Martinez's line-drive rate of 19 percent would suggest a much better average, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

Martinez's batting average on balls put in play is just .237, 74 points below his career rate and 59 points below the American League's average.

If he hits like that, we'll be real good," Jim Leyland said. "He's shown signs of coming forth a little bit, he's hit a lot of balls hard, but he hasn't got hits on them, so he's hit in some tough luck. He's had some days where he hasn't really swung that good. It doesn't have to be of that magnitude [Saturday] night, but if we can get him going really good, it's a pretty impressive lineup."

Sep 21, 2014 9:40 PM

Michael Cuddyer homered in his first at-bat on Sunday, extending his hitting streak to 21 games.

The streak is the longest in the Major Leagues this season.

Cuddyer also extended his Colorado record for consecutive games reaching base to 40.

"It's tough to do, but it's typical of Cuddy," Walt Weiss said. "He's just that guy that's steady."

Cuddyer is hitting .339/.394/.573 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI this season.

Francisco Rodriguez Earns 300th Save

Sep 18, 2014 7:59 AM

Francisco Rodriguez closed out Milwaukee's win over Atlanta on Saturday, two months after he was out of baseball entirely.

The save was the 300th of Rodriguez's career.

"A lot of people thought that I was done, that I had retired," he said. "People forgot that I was just 31-years-old. In my career, just last year was a really bad year. I know what I am capable of doing."

Rodriguez was signed by the Brewers on May 16. He has converted all six of his save opportunities and has not been scored upon in 15 of his 16 appearances.
