Darvish Might Approach 300 Strikeouts

Sep 29, 2014 12:23 AM

The Texas Rangers are starting to wonder if Yu Darvish can strike out 300 batters this season.

No pitcher has struck out that many batters since Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling did for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001.

So far, Darvish has 49 strikeouts in less than 33 innings.

"He can finesse you, and he can overpower you," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He knows what he has when he comes out of the bullpen, and he knows what he can use. He's comfortable out there."

Sep 29, 2014 12:27 AM

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo has been hit by 10 pitches this month.

Cingrani Notches Four-Strikeout Inning For Reds

Nov 25, 2014 6:16 PM

Cincinnati Reds left-hander Tony Cingrani, making just his third Major League start, accomplished a rare feat on Sunday afternoon.

He became the fifth Cincinnati pitcher to strike out four batters in an inning. Cingrani struck out Denard Span, who reached first base when the ball got by catcher Corky Miller. The lefty then shut down Bryce Harper, Ian Desmond, Adam LaRoche.

Cingrani also tied a career high with nine strikeouts and got his first Major League hit against the Washington Nationals.

Dickey Matches Mark For April Losses Following Cy Young

Sep 22, 2014 7:13 AM

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander R.A. Dickey lost his fourth game of the season on Sunday afternoon against the New York Yankees.

Dickey matches four other pitchers for the most losses in April after winning the Cy Young award the previous season.

CC Sabathia (2008), Doug Drabek, (1991), Frank Viola (1989) and Randy Jones (1977) also own the dubious distinction.

Red Sox Off To Best Start Since 2002

Sep 19, 2014 7:58 PM

The Boston Red Sox beat the Houston Astros on Saturday night, extending their record to 17-7 on the season.

The mark represents the best start for the team since 2002.

David Ortiz is hitting .519 (14 of 27) with two homers and nine RBIs since getting back into the lineup last Saturday after dealing with a heel injury.

"He's doing things that look to him to be very easy, but its hard to imagine or even script out that he'd have this kind of performance considering the layoff," manager John Farrell said.

Boston can tie a club record for the most wins in April by completing a four-game sweep over Houston (7-17) on Sunday.

Could Tigers Break Team Strikeout Record?

Oct 31, 2014 5:14 AM

Anibal Sanchez struck out 17 batters on Friday night, spurring talk that the Detroit Tigers could break the Major League Baseball record for team strikeouts in a season.

The 2003 Chicago Cubs struck out 1,404 batters.

Through 21 games this season, the Tigers have 211 strikeouts, which is a hair more than 10 per game and puts them on pace to shatter the record with 1,628.

Kemp Struggling With Inside Pitches

Oct 31, 2014 6:34 PM

Matt Kemp hasn't been driving the ball this season, which may indicate that he's still building strength in his shoulder.

The outfielder had offseason labrum surgery on his left shoulder.

Kemp hasn't done much on inside pitches -- through Wednesday, he was 6-for-27 (.222) with one walk.

During his MVP-caliber 2011 season, he hit .402/.447/.698 with 14 home runs on inside pitches.

Opponents Hitting .360 Against Strasburg In First Inning

Sep 16, 2014 10:30 PM

Stephen Strasburg is 1-4 with a 3.16 ERA this season thanks to some poor run support, but his numbers are a bit misleading.

The right-hander's ERA doesn't include four unearned runs. Strasburg has allowed 15 runs in 31.1 innings and opponents are hitting .360 against him in the first inning.

He's allowing a .186 batting average after the first frame.

Nationals Aren't Scoring Runs For Strasburg

Oct 14, 2014 9:42 PM

Stephen Strasburg has pitched well this season, but the Washington Nationals simply aren't providing him with much run support.

Washington has scored just eight runs with Strasburg on the mound this season.

In five starts, the right-hander is 1-4 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.
